Richmond Coliseum to host holiday doubleheaders in '12 and '13. George Mason will play Richmond in 2012

Finally the state of Virginia; which in recent years has started to evolve as a hotbed for college hoops; will feature more intrastate competition beginning in December 2012.  David Teel of the Daily Press is reporting that the Richmond Coliseum will be hosting one-night holiday doubleheaders in 2012 and 2013 featuring eight Virginia schools.  The eight schools involved are George Mason, ODU, UVA, JMU, Hampton, Virginia Tech, Richmond, and VCU.  Mason is slated to play Richmond in December of 2012 along with UVA against ODU.  The Patriots haven't tip-offed against the Spiders since they were last in the CAA in 2001. UVA will be Mason's second Virginia school on the non-conference schedule for 2012 with UVA coming to Fairfax.

Hopefully this will evolve into something bigger that features even more Virginia schools in a tournament-style setting. And oh yes a different venue would be nice.

Well now I've got 2 reasons to hope Coach Hewitt knows how to win in that building better than Coach L did...

Yeah....the Richmond Coliseum.."state of the art" 1960's design with all the ambiance of an air plane hanger...not to mention its in a "great part of town".

Ugh stop it guys.   Are you boys afraid of a little city?   Scared of the "urban" atmosphere.  Richmond is as safe as any large town that calls itself a city.  Grow some....man up.....

Given, the area around the Coliseum isn't so bad that it'll keep me away; it's a bit like Camden Yards.  Everything is fine until you make a wrong turn.  Still, that place is a horrible shell-of-a-building that should have stopped holding events years ago.

Agreed...I think there are 4 total sets of bathrooms in the whole arena and my shoes are still sticky from walking on that floor back in March!

It's a dump.  When is the CAA tourney going to move to...ANYWHERE???

What about the Showplace Arena in ....Upper Marlboro, I think....I think its a litle smaller, but a change of locale is really needed...like when the ACC tounament moved out of North Carolina  for the first time and went to the Capital Center in the late seventies, after years in the Reynolds Colesium and then the original Greensboro Colesium. That tournament now rotates between Raleigh, Atlanta, D.C. and Boston on an irregular basis to keep the geograpic balance tilted toward the North Carolina teams. The Richmond Colesium is getting "old" in both years and as an interesting venue. Its time to mix it up. A one year "experiment" is called for.

Agreed on the change of arenas but the Showplace Arena is too small for the CAA tournament. We are trying to expand the CAA's publicity and having the tournament in an arena for 5,100 people isn't the way to do that.

Oh'...I thought it was bigger, or at least expandable. 5100 is definitely too small. There are no good alternatives in Virginia...unless you go to JPJ at U.Va, but that seems unlikely because its still too big plus its at U.Va. lol. We could use the Hampton Colesium or the Scope...if they are still on use...but been there and done that, in the eighties...the Roanoke Colesium is a good size, but long past its prime and in the middle of Bum F**K. As far as on campus sites W&M Hall or whatever its called now is newly refurbished, and with the end seating installed is perhaps the biggest on campus area in the CAA at over 11,000 (they never use the one end though)...ODU's arena small, but is nice, VCU's is a glorified High School Gym so it is out. So, you can see why the tournament is held in Richmond every year can't you?

Crazy idea: Have to tourney at different schools with arenas.  GMU hosts 9000+.  William and Mary hosts 9000+.  Maybe there are other CAA schools that have a 10,000 person (give or take) arena.  Anything to get it out of VCU's backyard.  Does anybody have any thoughts?

I'd like to see it played at a pro arena....Verizon Center or even Wachovia center in Philly.  I'm sure they could get more people in those seats for the CAA tournament than the 76ers drag in.  Pro arena may not be an option though, so maybe  first mariner arena in baltimore?  It's got 11,000 seats and is a pretty decent venue, plus there would be the draw of a "big city" where there are hotels and the downtown/harbor area.

I would endorse that.  Anything to get it out of Richmond.  I'd endorse having the CAA tournament in Montana!

Looks like Larranaga might be regretting leaving us. Miami is going to get hit with sanctions in both football and basketball.

You are not kidding. UM is going to get nailed to the wall in this scandal.

I know about the Football sanctions....BIIIIIIIIG suprise huh? lol...but how is the basketball program affected? I wonder if Larranaga knew about them before he accepted the position?

The "First Mariner Arena"..nee, The Baltimore Civic Center, is an older "dumpier dump" than the Richmond Colesium....the City is nice though, with the inner Harbour and the Aquarium. but how would overall attendance be affected?

All sell outs go to South Beach. Lebron, Larranaga, Reggie Bush.

Larranaga didn't "leave" us, we just didn't choose to keep him.  It's a shame there is Larranaga bashing.  Without him we wouldn't be on the map and we'd still be in the Nestor/Westhead days.  But I wouldn't expect anything different from anybody (and I'm not saying you Hirsch) who has no knowledge of GMU basketball pre-1997.

Larranaga is not a sellout, not even close.  He stayed in Fairfax for less money than he could get elsewhere (Seton Hall, Providence, etc.)  We should be thanking him for his time here.

Seton  hall, Providence were sertently not giving him as much money as Miami. They prob offered close to what mason was offering. The only insetives to go to those schools was the confrence prestige. There is no reason to head to Miami other then money.  You would have to completly rebuild the team, where mason is already a preseaon top 25. Miami offered a mill a year instead of mason's 500k. SELL OOUT
