Dr. Cabrera and Tom O'Connor make the move to the Atlantic 10 official

George Mason president, Dr. Angel Cabrera, couldn't be in Fairfax today due to a prior commitment in Arizona but was he video-conferenced in for the official announcement. Love how the guy is wearing a Nike George Mason polo for this press conference. Basically Cabrera stated that prior decision to pass on the Atlantic 10 last year was before he started at George Mason. In other words, it was Alan Merten who turned it down, not him. Not new information but just something to remember when a lot of people said Cabrera's lack an athletics background might hinder George Mason's department. Clearly they are making moves to strength athletics and the overall brand at George Mason.

Pretty sure it was Merten who put the kibosh on Coach L's raise as well. VCU took their final four money and built a practice facility and improved their arena; we took ours and built a new engineering building and some dorms. Merten's priorities were clearly not in line with the basketball team's, despite him sitting courtside every game. Glad we finally have President who understands that Athletics is pretty much the #1 way to keep alumni connected to their alma mater.

All of the commentary I heard put the Coach L raise (and assistant's raise) fiasco on O'Connor. Never heard anyone put it on Merten, but interesting to think about.

It was on Merten, but mostly because of timing. TOC also had this with the A10 good to go last summer until Merten upended it.

At first I was excited but the A-10 (and C-USA) is getting raped! Not only is the Big East taking Butler and Xavier but there are rumors that Saint Louis and Dayton are leaving as well.

Temple and Charlotte are also gone. Maybe the A-10 should talk to C-USA about a merger because both conferences are getting raped by the Old and New Big East.
