George Mason featured in ESPN's Weekly Watch

Great pic of Bryon Allen in ESPN.com's latest Weekly Watch. So far Mason is taking care of business in the CAA after getting off to a slow start this season and are looking like the conferences's most consistent team. They will get a chance to further prove themselves this Thursday night at Drexel.

glad we are getting a little national recognition again. it seems no matter though we will still need to win the CAA to make the tournament.

Our season is over. We, like Towson, have to wait and win in Richmond if we want to make it to the dance. History tells us that Allen has a better chance of making a 3pt shot than us winning it all in Richmond.

Does it matter how many games they're back? We both have to win in Richmond for this season to mean anything now. 3 back, 7 or 11 games back... we all will play the games that matter on their home floor.

Our season is over until Richmond, and i refuse to smile like a moron and wave my Mason flag because of it. We had huge expectations as alumni for this season, and a 130 RPI was not one of them.

It would be nice to see vcu out of the top 4 come tourney time, so that they would have to win 4 games to win the tourney.  That might neutralize their home city advantage.

Let's meet Bryon Allen of the Patriots!  In his last 5 games, Bryon has averaged over 10 points, over 4 assists, has made 18 of his last 20 free throws (90%), and has gone 2 for 6 from behind the arc.....

Yep our season is over...why are we even playing the rest of the games on the schedule? Get off your couch and stop being so negative. Sure our SOS is bad and we pretty much have to win in Richmond to make it to the big tourney but there is a lot too look forward to here. A lot of our young guys are getting big minutes which will only help for the next couple of years. These guys are learning every day and if you can't see an improvement from when we started a couple of months ago then you aren't watching the same team that I am.

Finally something I can agree with. I'm not satisfied with a program that is content with just contending in the CAA. I'm looking for Mason being in or near the top 25 consistently.

Tired of this VCU is in Richmond so they have home court advantage nonsense. How many times have they won the CAA Tournament since it has been in Richmond? The answer, 4 times in 22 years. Other teams win there, its an excuse and not a real factor.

May I suggest you enroll at Gonzaga University?  A fine school, nestled in Spokane, in the state of Washington.  It boasts a basketball tradition of about a dozen years of superior play and tournament appearances.  As mid major programs go, it's about your only option.

Just because they haven't always won doesn't mean there's no advantage.

Wouldn't an advantage lead to more championships? Mason has the most final apperances with 10, its a lame excuse, go out and beat the team, no matter where the game is. Its not like we are playing them at the Siegel Center.

that is true and good stats to back it up.  I just hate seeing so many VCPUuu fans there through out the weekend.  If it were at UVA or U of Maryland ah whatever..........GO MASON~!!!!!!!!

I'm a Maryland fan and I take game game shots for a Terps web site. I was at the George Mason game this past Saturday and took my son and others. The couple game pics posted here were mine and I was pleased to be able to submit them here.

We had a great time at the game and we loved watching the Patriots scrap for a win against a decent Georgia State team. We'll be back for sure. Appreciate what you have here, you all have had a steady winner for a number of years.

Why don't you lay down on your couch relax and enjoy the season in the here and now. Sports is entertainment and fun. Sure I would like win every game and be top ten rated team but thats the joy of being mid major team. Learn to dream about the zietgiest  of the CAA past...if VCU made it to the final four last year and GMU in 2006 hope spring eternal

That's exactly the tact I would like the team to take.  But I am a fan (and an AD or three should share my opinion as well).  And my viewpoint, backed by statistics, is that the home team has an advantage.  That's an unassailable fact.  So sign me up for any petition; we should alternate the tourney venues or go for neutral site.  Or, let's play the tourney in downtown DC and let VCU talk about not making lame excuses and going out and beating us.

This is not a high school basketball program. Many of us have supported this program with much more than a block of season tickets and 100 dollar annual gift. All these kids are fine kids i'm sure, but this is a George Mason basketball blog. Here there will be many perspectives and they will be shaped by how we see the program past and present. The game itself is a fantastic outlet for all of us, but it is much more than that for myself... it's a passion! I'm a very generous member of the Patriot club, but not too generous, i expect something in return and that's winning. All great programs have two things in common; that's passion and a zero tolerance for mediocrity. I have both and i think you should as well. It's the coaches job to stroke these kids ego's and it's our job as fans to kick the program in the ass when we see something amiss, and believe me... this program has stink on it this year already... Coach H. has a million dollar pay day each year here at Mason and we're not going to clap for him for doing a subpar job. Expectation is everything with these guys, it's human nature to let up... we cannot allow that. Go Mason!!!

Your option is absurd and based upon a vision that has no historical context. Either you are a very young man, or new to the area. Had you been following our program you would know just how close we are to the status you speak of. We have been climbing for almost 30 years now with this program. We are so close... close to slipping and close to reaching a good grasp on that peak. Which one? Well... that's where we differ on our reaction to subpar standards that will eventually put us back decades in the past. We've climbed too far and too long for that. Go Mason!!!

The CAA is having a blowout year; i mean.... we're stinking up the court. We were in a fantastic position to win 30 plus games this year with our weak schedule. I'm sorry i'm not a gold fish. I can't just forget what happened every five minutes and start fresh. Georgia st.? Are we really celebrating a Georgia st. win at home? i can't believe we have so many Mason fans that accept this with a smile on their faces. Something positive you asked? I don't know... i'm gladd the kids are having fun.

This is not the Ga. St of old, that team played great switching their zones.  It was a good win even though we could have played better.  The season is not over it's wide open, I'm pretty sure we'll still blow some big games and win some as well but it's all wide open.  We were all looking forward to keeping a strangle hold on the CAA but that's not happening but we can easily still win or lose it.  Try being Towson, 0-16, that season is likely over.  We're ok, we need to get better but you're getting a little crazy!

I'm familiar with the Zags. I was lucky to get out of Mason 25 years ago, but have been a loyal booster boy ever since. And I was thinking of the Zags. And the Shockers, Flyers, Wolfpack (Nevada), Aztecs, Gaels, Bulldogs.......yeah, I know they're not all there every year but point is, just because you're a mid major doesn't preclude a school from punching through the ceiling and Mason should do it more consistently.
Settling. It's the Mason curse. Second class citizens, not good enough, commuter school, couldn't into UVA, be happy with the 15 minutes of fame, that god awful Bon Jovi song, blah blah blah....Let's face it, Mason Nation, of which I guess I am a member, is kind of lame. Nice teams, but I expect more. There's no reason not to.
It's about standards and I think Hewitt is right to aim very, very, high. We should be playing the locals-Georgetown, MD, and and going on the road, a la, Michigan State, playing a super tough schedule. Why not? Are they ducking little old George Mason?
Couch Coach, I'd respond but I have no idea what you're trying to say. You trash the program and then get wacky. I've been following the program since 1980. How long have you been around?

Unfortunately, I am so old that, when I went to Mason, there was no Patriot Center. I know our history. Just like you, I want us to become the mid major juggernaut that Gonzaga is, and more. Just like you, I appreciate the fact that we hold a certain sway in the minds of the college hoops world, along with a handful of other programs who have established themselves as tourney threats (such as Butler, maybe Davidson, and, alas, VCU). Just like you, I would like to capitalize on our stature and parlay it to something even greater, be it either the consistent success and national presence of a Gonzaga or the leaps into national stardom that Butler has taken. So, once we got into the national conversation (2006), I wanted us to return again (2008) and again (2011), to keep our name out there, keep establishing ourselves. Which in turn breeds recruiting which in turn breeds success. But, man, enjoy the ride, willya? It may not all come at once. There will be missteps here and there, especially with all the changes the past year has brought. When I read where a couchcoach and moses, and now you, can’t "smile" over of a victory because the team hasn’t met their overall expectations, that strikes me as a little absurd. There’s no doubt that the team is not where we want it to be - I’m sure we’d all love to be undefeated. No one is "settling for subpar." But show a little encouragement that the team is improving. [About Gonzaga: my wife went there, so I’m an "adopted" fan who has enjoyed their ride, a dozen years and still going, a lot. They may be a picture of consistency, but I can tell you they have had their ups and downs as well. The ride is great, though. I hope the Mason ride runs even longer and greater.]Criticize what’s not up to standards, commend what is, and marvel at what goes beyond. Stew over the losses, savor the wins. Hey, we’re undefeated in the conference, we’re now the CAA darling in the national bracketology, and if we keep winning like this, rest assured they will start mentioning us as a possible at large bid. I’ve been critical of our play this year, but now things are looking up a bit, and I’m joining the party. Stand over there in the corner with your folded arms and your grim face if you want to.

Yeah, it's been awhile for me since I last visited the campus, but I take it as kind of badge of honor that we are a commuter school (less so nowadays, right?).  Sure, it's easy to rah-rah together when you're living together already.  We have to do it the hard way and commute into Mason Nation.  That's right, we're one big-ass carpool!!

Ha! Not bad. There was one dorm on campus when I was there- but we knew our cars. I've been one of those Pat Club guys for a long time and now that I'm getting old and cranky I feel the need to bitch a little. I love every game. I enjoy Mid Major hoops more than U Conn vs. Syracuse- more below the rim, sound basketball.
I do think the program is at a place where it needs to grow or stagnate. Losing Coach L (and I am a huge fan of his) may be a silver lining thing in the long run. We'll see.
