George Mason finally wins again at ODU, improves to 3-0 in CAA

(Credit: Rob Ostermaier, Daily Press)
Since the inception of this blog I have never been able to write about a victory in Norfolk against ODU.  It has been nearly 8 years since the the Patriots last got a win there.  It was usually a date on the schedule you would pencil in as one of the few losses on the CAA record and the fact that they won there this year could be huge.  This wasn't last year's 27-win ODU squad, but this also wasn't last year's George Mason squad.  Mason looked like the better squad all game long as ODU's offense struggled mightily to put any runs together. It looked as if the Patriots were going to run away with this one early but they got a little sloppy before halftime. The sloppiness then carried over to the 2nd half when they had some real trouble getting any baskets outside of the paint.  Mason had their fair share of mistakes and scoring struggles but were able to maintain their lead the whole game and make the big plays when they had to. While ODU's offense was awful, some of that was due to the Patriots defensive efforts and that has to make Paul Hewitt happy.

It was amazing how many second chance opportunities the Monarchs could not convert on. They ended the game with 22 offensive rebounds compared to Mason's 8.  Erik Copes would have been more helpful on the glass if not for getting into early foul trouble. His aggressiveness got the best of him and the refs were calling every ticky-tack foul. Regardless, the Patriots could have used some help on the boards outside of Ryan Pearson and Mike Morrison, both of whom had great games.  They made it a point to get the ball in to Morrison early and it opened things up for everyone else, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Pearson started the game with back-to-back three-pointers and Vertrail Vaughns added another early but that was sadly end of their three-pointers for the night.  They certainly had their share of open looks but couldn't connect.  Luckily they never trailed and every time ODU started to come back Bryon Allen would drive the lane and get an "and 1" or two free-throws.  Allen is really starting to become a nice point guard and his progression is paying dividends for this team.  He ended up scoring 10 of his 14 points in the second half and seemed unstoppable when he drove the lane. Vertrail Vaughns also stepped up in this game and hit some nice outside shots; the team needs more of this from him in the future. I really thought Andre Cornelius would have more of an impact on offense but his efforts on defense should not go unnoticed.

Overall the decision making from the back court is improving and we seeing less turnovers and ill-advised possessions. It was some ugly basketball for awhile but Mason proved to be a little less ugly edged out a tough road win.  ODU's defense and rebounding kept them in it but Mason made the defensive stops and big shots when they had to.  Despite some mistakes they never lost the killer instinct and that is a great sign for this team. I've been hard on Paul Hewitt so far but he was able to accomplish something last night that Jim Larranaga rarely did and this is starting to look like a different team than what we saw in the beginning of the year.

Showdown with Georgia State tomorrow should be a good one.

Pearson was a BEAST last night.  Morrison was a Morrison I have never seen the first 10 minutes, but the "T" he received really slowed him up.  Allen has really improved.  I will totally give props to this team as they are totally different after the Duquesne game.  Does ACorn get a lot of the credit? I think with ACorn opening the middle because of his 3 pt shooting potential and good D, it has really helped.  Fear the beard as that was one of the best games I have ever seen Pearson play, especially against a much taller team.  Coach Hewitt I give you well deserved props also.  Great win in a hostal environment that we usually get smoked at. Go PATRIOTS, bring on GA State!

ODU was not only cold from the field, but they were terrible from the stripe.  If they make foul shots, it likely would have been a very different game.  The 22 offensive rebounds for ODU is troubling.  But any win at ODU is great, with a battle of the CAA unbeatens looming tomorrow.

I loved Allen from the beginning. Just saying.

Game ball to Bryon Allen! For the reasons mentioned by Ryan - and for making me look good in my comments a couple of blogs ago!
Odd, to me it seemed like Pearson’s night was quieter than usual (other than his back to back three’s to start the game), not really a "beast" but quietly getting the job done.Hated to see that technical against Morrison. Thought he didn’t deserve it, though the ref didn’t have the benefit of seeing the replay. It came right at most inopportune time as we were on a run, and I was afraid it would short-circuit his and Mason’s momentum, but I guess things worked out! What was really cool was, going into this game, you had the feeling that momentum for the team was building, and if we could win games like this one, we might become the frontrunner in the CAA. Everyone seems resigned to the caa being a one bid conference, but if a team separates itself, and say, wins the regular season by a couple of games, they would have to get consideration for an at large bid. Especially if there is noticeable improvement within the conference, which I think there will be, and the caa has a successful bracketbusters. All of which is to say, it’s nice to have that feeling that the game had implications like this (instead of that resigned feeling in the back of your mind that "we’ll need to win the tournament, anyway"), and to win!

I had a lot to do with those ODU missed foul shots.  Through sheer telepathic will.

My "beast" comment was for all the other stuff.  The rebound on the free throw he missed against 3 ODU players, the charge he took, the shoot when we needed it, the hustle under the boards and the way he had to create his shot with being double and tripled teamed.  It really opened up the outside, though we were off from behind the arc as a team, but I really think his game was extremely well rounded.  Just like Allen hitting some key baskets by driving to the hoop to kill ODU runs, Pearson had key baskets and rebounds.  A little more boxing out by the team would have been nice.

Happy to eat my previous post.  Allen is passing w/ two hands and at one point the guys boxed out so well the ball hit the floor (woops - too bad no one went for the ball).  Glad to see improvement.  Now if Mike can keep working on his passing he and Ryan can share time at the top of the key.

My first live GMU basketball game. Enjoyed it, but offensive rebounding is troubling (or lack of it).  Pearson is fun to watch, since I can't watch my favorite player from last year.  I never understood why he(who must not be named) left for L'ville.  Anyone ever get a clear explanation?

Probably the allure of playing for a Big East school and Rick Pitino. Also, probably didn't feel his game would match up well with Hewitt's system.

When Coach L left he felt betrayed. Had an opportunity to play in Big East and went for it. Also his brother lives in Louisville area.

Not to mention, Hancock's high school coach was hired as an assistant at L'ville
