George Mason plays its last game without Andre Cornelius

George Mason plays their final game without the services of Andre Cornelius on Saturday at Radford. The Patriots are looking for a boost after a demoralizing loss to a UVA team that exposed pretty much every single one of their weaknesses. We will talk more about what Cornelius brings to this year's team later on before the game versus Duquesne. For this one it will be interesting to see if Mason takes out their frustrations against the Highlanders or if they play another uninspiring road game like the one we saw against Towson. I'm not saying they NEED to blowout Radford but boy doesn't that just seem like something that should happen with these guys?

Radford has only one win versus D1 competition this season, which came against Delaware. They are ranked 310th and 336th in the nation on points per game and field goal percentage respectively this season and only have one player averaging double figures (J. Edwards 10.7). However, they turn over the ball at a less frequent rate than the Patriots, which is pretty damn sad.

Yeah, Radford is a pretty sad team. I wouldn't be suprised if the Patriots will be able to beat them by 20 points is they bring thier A game. That being said the Patriots need to be inspired to win, or else this will be an ugly win.

Dear Acorn,
If you lift a credit card again please either a.) surrender it to the authorities, or b.) use it to buy a brain bigger than your namesake. You better get out there and be a damn floor general six sigma navy seal operative and bring us some leadership and perimeter defense back to the point. Let's help these green PG's develop with your leadership. Go get it.
Best,
BatMason

This explains the blowout at UVA. They were clearly looking past that game to the showdown with Radford.

I assume everybody feels we should win today.  Forgetting the spread, how much does everybody feel we should win by?  Not *what* we will win by or *if* we will win, but how much *should* we win by?  Keep in mind, VCU just beat Richmond by 22.

Did you see the ugly first half?  They would luck if they can win a weak team like Radford. I really questing why we hair a guy who was given $7 mill to fire. PH does not know how to coach.

Really, you are giving up on Hewitt after 10 games?  So, if I told you going into this season Mason would lose the head coach, change systems having to relearn everything, lose the best player (Cam), 6th man Hancock will transfer, and the PG will miss the first 10 games. Then told you they would go 7-3 in the first 10 games you would have said I was crazy.

BUT THAT IS WHAT THEY DID.  Ugly? Sure.  Lost 2 games they could have won, yes.  But 7-3 despite injury, suspension, and system change is not that bad. I will take it as we turn the focus to conference play. Oh yeah, don't look now but Mason is in first place in the CAA.

BTW, even if they don't put up 27 wins this year, everyone slow your roll on running Hewitt out of town.  It will take 2 years of his recruits in place to really know how he will do at Mason in the long run.

I agree with your point about patience, I think right now we're mainly we're blindsided by this style of coaching. The lesser emphasis on D and faster paced run and gun style O could definitely work eventually after Hewitt has time to crate his own roster, but right now its allowing other teams to go on lopsided runs, shoot the lights out, and force a bunch of turnovers. It's just kind of nasty to watch at times.
Take the record with a grain of salt, more like one of those piles of salt on the side of the road that the snow plows use. Our SOS and RPI are abysmal at the moment, the only team we've faced that isn't doo doo just wiped the floor with us a few days ago.
I agree, we should give Hewitt time, and it could be a lot of fun to watch some high ranking recruits play in a few years if Hewitt can pull a few more in here. I mean just look at Copes, that kid is going to be a CAA terminator in a few years. If Hewitt could land a few more like Copes within the next few seasons, it will be a new era for Mason bball, and we could wipe up on the CAA and be competitive in non-conference play.
Speaking for myself, it's just bewildering with the stark stylistic differences between Hewitt and L, and the transition pains are a little tough to watch at times.

Mason has to watch out for Georgia State. Georgia state beat
FIU 73-47, Killed URI 96-64 however lost to FAU pretty bad 84-77. FAU only 3
wins come from the CAA. The CAA is in some trouble this year.

VCU might even be better than last year. They have already
beet some good teams, including wins over USF(Big East) George Washington (A-10)
and Richmond (A-10). They kept it close with 12 ranked Alabama (SEC). Only suffered a signal digit loss to Georgia Tech (ACC) who is no longer coached by ________Hewitt.

I don't think people are unhappy with 7-3.  I think most people would take that, considering all the things you listed above.  I believe what most people are concerned about is that there appears to be little improvement on fundamentals since the Rhode Island game.  Whether you are a run and gun team or a half court team the fundamentals of passing, defense, rebounding, etc. are all the same.

I agree with your list but it still doesn't explain complete lack of discipline on fundamentals-defensive position, boxing out, protecting the ball.  If it was just an offense they were struggling to execute I'd be inclined to be more patient.  Some of these issues should be taken care of already.  This team wasn't this sloppy last year but maybe that's because we didn't see extensive minutes from this year's starters.  I hope you are right.  For now winning ugly games we should destroy, in the end, is better than losing.  forget RPI etc. we all know winning the tourney is all we have.  Debby, no way VCU is better withour the four seniors they lost last year!

We're definitely not just going to be able to tip toe through the CAA's tulips this again this year. GW stinks though.

Vancy Gates from Cincinnati gets a six game suspension for assaulting
an opponent, causing blood. Holloway from Xavier started a brawl and admitted

gangsters received a 1 game suspension. Both players embarrassed their
respected teams.

Cornelius received a 10 game suspension for spending 60
dollars that did not belong to him.

The saying goes don't do the crime if you cant do the time. However with the recent activity of other major programs, it is a safe bet to say Cornelius's 10 game suspension is to harsh.

Whether you spend $60 or $6,000 dollars (and yes, I know there is a legal difference) is irrelevant. What matters is that when an athlete commits ANY crime they jeopardize their team and they sacrifice their team's success for their own selfish instant gratification. It's a character thing that reflects on the whole program, they can't just slap someone's wrist for a felony. I talk a lot of smack about getting to the tourney as being the only thing that's important, but, I'm glad our program has the class to bench a player and make him take responsibility. In light of recent events, you should understand that covering for athletes' irresponsibilities is a slippery slope, which often leads to shame and embarrassment not just for the team, but the athletic program, the alumni... the whole school.
