George Mason downs Towson for first CAA win of the year

The Patriots got the win over Towson on Saturday to start off 1-0 in the CAA. But that outcome was never really in question heading into this game.  They jumped out to a big lead early and then seemed like they coasted through the rest of the game.  A conference win is a conference win and I said that all these games are going to be important come February, however Mason lacked a killer instinct in this one.  Against a slightly better team, the Patriots could have easily have lost and that's not a good sign considering they are about to face UVA on Tuesday.

Something positive to take out of this game, besides the victory of course, was that Mike Morrison had another solid night getting 14 points and 8 rebounds. The team had a very balanced attack, something last year's team also had.  Ryan Pearson also continued to be effective from the free-throw line going 6-for-6 from there, as a team there shot 82% from the charity stripe. Much improved from the beginning of the season where they were leaving a lot of points on the court.

Freshman Corey Edwards missed his second straight game due to a concussion, but Hewitt said after the game he should be a go for Tuesday.

I'm really curious to see how they'll play against UVA, definately the best scheduled opponent to date, and, on the road in Charlottesville.

So am I, it's easy to overlook a team like Towson, but they really need to be firing on ally cylinders to have a chance against UVA. I'll have a preview up tomorrow for that one.

At the game against towson.  I really was impressed with Sherrod Wright's athletiscism. the guy had a base line slam dunk that was in incredible. And his shooting from outside is definitely improved. Still too many careless turnovers.  Overall I think Mason is molding a very good team come tournament time. Also, its early but i say we defintley Corey Edwards at the point.

Wow.  He did his homework!  Last comment was nothing from the bench, I don't think Copes is nothing, and who knows what a healthier Bennet brings Arledge could provide surprising spurts as well.  But we all know this game will require care and discipline we've yet to consistently show.  Perhaps we'll play up to (as opposed to down with Towson) our opponent.  Go Patriots!

If you go by the numbers though, the bench production has been spotty.  Edwards coming back changes that but overall no one of the bench is avg more than 4.3 points a game.

Just glad we are playing them. It is always good to have November and December games that the general public keeps an eye on. With both GMU and VCU getting all the attention via the final fours I would imagine UVA would love to make a statement that they still are the elite school in sports in this state. How about that football team! Sorry lost my train of thought. Do hope we play well but I still think this is a work in progress.

My son and I attend the Towson game and got seats right on the floor at baseline. You can really see the athleticism of our guys up that close, as well as the little things they do well...or poorly.

Keep an eye out on the Towson coach for technicals this year. He spent the whole game standing on the floor. Once the ref had to go BEHIND him to get by. Hard to believe he didn't get at least a warning on that one. He's a hoot to watch though. He kept stomping his foot to get his team's attention. I suggest we call him Thumper.  Towson showed heart. They dribble too much and are spotty on defense, but they'll steal one or two wins this year at their house.
