Previewing Florida Atlantic

George Mason gets a real test this weekend at Florida Atlantic. The Patriots will be playing in front of a sold out crowd and will give the young players plenty to deal with on the season's first real road game. Sherrod Wright will be playing despite taking a hard fall on his wrist against Monmouth, but Paris Bennett is listed is a game time decision. The possible return of Bennett might help with the turnovers and give the team a bit more stability on both ends. This is the type of game the Patriots need their veterans to step up because it's very possible the young back court struggles early with an intense crowd.

The Owls haven't gotten off to a great start this year, much like Mason, but I think they are better than their 1-3 record.  They hammered Georgia State from behind the three-point line on a neutral court (15-for-25) but then had an awful shooting night at American.  They are a strong rebounding team, especially on the offensive glass. Mason gets to the free-throw line more than the Owls and have been more successful from there. The Owls most consistent player is big forward Kore White, who is the only starter that has scored double digits in each of their four games. The Patriots usual game plan of driving to the basket could thwart a good shooting night by FAU.

Knowing that FAU has the potential to hit the open three-pointer is something that worries me in this game.  Mason's perimeter defense has looked pretty awful so far this year and things could get away from them early if they leave guys as open as they did against FIU.  The uptempo offense they have been running has been putting points on the board but has led to a lot of mistakes and miscues on the floor.  It will be interesting to see if the Patriots show improvement in ball control on this trip.

I think it'll be a close game. But FAU looked terrible against a weak AU the other night.

Yeah let's just hope Mason only has 10 turnovers like AU did...

That uptempo offense seems to run away with Mason's young players sometimes, leading to bad passes and off-kilter ball handling. Sometimes they seem to be rushing it so much they don't give themselves time to set and shoot, which accounts for the clangers we saw against FIU. They're giving way too much space to outside shooters, too. I did like some of the defense under the basket against FIU. They frustrated a lot of inside attempts to score.

Is it going to be on ESPN3 tonight?

The game is tomorrow night, and not televised. Radio will be on 106.7 the Fan

WOW.. nice to finally see someone with a WORSE free throw shooting percentage!!  That could be a huge factor.  I think this will be a good game to see where we stand.  If we lose this one and continue to look sloppy with the ball, it could easily be like a few years ago where we would win at home, but just couldn't do it on the road.  If we win, I think it will show that we really are improving, that the guys are confident, and that it really is just a matter of the guys playing more together and learning a new scheme.  I think we win this game and start playing better ball.

Unrelated, but I noticed we have NO scholarship players on the team this year from the state of Virginia.  Not that it matters, just pointing it out.

I know it's been talked about already, but anything new on if the game will be on anywhere online?  GoMason.com?  Justin.tv?  Something else?

My takeawys from the game: 1) GMU was headed toward another 20 turnover night but cleaned it up in the final ten minutes and the OT (although it's bad when your PGs have 60% of your TOs), 2) Mike showed some nice moves on his shots, 3) Eric needs to work on his FT shooting, 4) the team outshot FAU in every category but let the Owls grab 7 more offensive rebounds, and 5) it's hard to win a 45-minute game with only 8 players.
