NIT Tip-off starts tonight

Stream: ESPN3.com, Free live stream

Audio: GoMason.com

Spread: Mason 14.5 point favorite

George Mason plays its first game of the NIT Tip-off tonight at 9:30 pm against FIU in Blacksburg, VA.  FIU is coached by hall of famer Isiah Thomas and this will be their first game of the season.  They return their leading scorer from last season but only two starters.  The Patriots should be able to take advantage in the front court as FIU doesn't have much experience there. Mason's back court needs to limit the turnovers tonight and do a better job of preventing FIU's guards from penetrating the lane.

This tournament could really show us what this Patriots team is all about, however they need to play much better than they did on Friday night.  Scoring didn't seem to be an issue for the Patriots and it is almost crazy to think they got to 92 points while only making two three-pointers.  The uptempo offense wasn't running perfect, but it was the first game of the season.  If Mason plays like they did in that second half against Rhode Island you have to like their chances against FIU tonight and most likely Virginia Tech next.

Did you see the post game interview where Pearson basically said their next game is VT, but then corrected himself by saying, at VT? Hilarious, he walked off laughing cause he realized he may have inadvertently created locker room material for FIU.

I don't think he intended that but he knew that's what it sounded like and tried to recover.  I don't think they're looking ahead and Friday night should have solidified that for anyone who was.  I think that 14.5 favorite is based more on preseason projections than what we showed Friday.

Yeah, this team CERTAINLY shouldn't be looking past ANY opponent. I see FIU being a close, hard-fought contest tonight as will most Mason games this year. Mason has a talented team this year but their execution is going to need to drastically improve against the better teams.

I can't agree more with Matt and Mike... losing Cam, Luke, Tate, and Andrea, 4 of 6 core players from last year, really hurt and it shows.

If Mason plays like It did in the second half against Rhoad Island (letting up almost 60 points) i don't like their chances of beating anyone. Someone better be able to hit an outside shot tonight. ONe of the deepest shots the other night came from a Mike Morrison pass (15ft). I think it's going to be a long(less) season.

Dear Coach Hewitt,
Wow...... what a sloppy, undisciplined crew this is.....ball handling is awful....they through silly, long passes and don't know how to handle the pressure defense. They seem to be out of shape.  They didn't really look like they cared o.......maybe they just thought the win would come eventually.  If this is a sign of the season.....it's going to be a long year. You have a lot of work cut out for you.
