Paul Hewitt hires first assistant, retains both 2011 incoming recruits

We learned that none of Paul Hewitt's from Georgia Tech are following him to Fairfax so that is three positions he needs to fill quickly.  Justin Young of National Hoops Report and Fox Sports says Hewitt has hired Chris Kreider of Georgia Southern as his first assistant.  Kreider worked with Hewitt as an admin at Georgia Tech is described by Young as "a star in waiting". Kreider is a labeled as excellent recruiter and will hopefully help fill the void of losing Chris Caputo.

You may have read this elsewhere over the weekend but both incoming 2011 recruits, Corey Edwards and Vaughn Gray are honoring their intents to play at George Mason next season.

The National Hoops Report had a Q & A with Hewitt, check it out here.

As much as I admire Larranaga, Hewitt is now my guy. I'm looking forward to a great season and a great future for mason basketball.

Not a great hire but not a bad hire either. I would stick this one somewhere in the middle. Could've been worst but I think O'Connor went with the safe pick. I'm trying not to have my hopes up just because I dont want to be too disappointed two years from now. Things usually turn out better when you keep your expectations low.

Good day. Let's get ready to whoop up on tech and VCU, I'm on board let's do it.

Another positive to consider: I read somewhere that Hewitt was having some control issues at GA w/his assistant coaches, so it may be a good thing that Hewitt can handpick his new staff giving him the control he wants over the program. This could also go the other way but, I'm fairly positive overall.

I'm a GT fan. First of all, good luck to you and to Hewitt. Your success will depend on how well he chooses his staff. He did well at Siena and the first 5 years at Tech with 2 particular assistants, but after they were gone it was downright ugly. The man can recruit, but definitely needs help with the X's and O's. He was also pretty sensitive to criticism which wore thin with the fans. Sometimes a school and a coach both need a change of scenery and it works out best for both. I'm glad he's gone, but wish him and GMU well.

Head coaching jobs...Dean Keener went to JMU and Cliff Warren went to Jacksonville.

this could be good because Hewitts assts here may be less experienced dudes which'll allow them less of a chance to bolt for head coach gigs. Is Chris Kreider head coach material or still green?

Hewitt didn't pick his own assistants at GT, that's probably part of the reason.

I went through some of the GT message boards right after the announcement and was pleasantly surprised by how many GT fans thought this was a great hire for Mason. The guy had 1 winning ACC season in the last 7 years and the fans still wish him well? That was the turning point for me on my opinion of the hire. I love it now.
