George Mason to interview Jeff Jones today?

There have been a ton of names thrown out there for the head coaching job at George Mason lately.  From names like Jeff Capel to guys like Stony Brook's Steve Pikiell.  People who we may have thought were in the early running like Bill Courtney and Mike Lonergan seem to not be high on Tom O'Connor's list. Neither have been contacted by the university and Lonergan is already talking to GW about their vacancy. Meanwhile the local media near Cornell seems to think Courtney isn't going anywhere

One name that may or may not make the Mason fan base cringe is Jeff Jones, who is currently the head coach at American.  Yesterday afternoon Greg Burton of ESPN950 radio in Richmond claimed that Jones will be interviewing at George Mason today.  You can listen here, it starts at about the 7 minute mark.  Could be the Mason administration just doing their due diligence of a local guy but you never know with these things.

Jeff Jones is an interesting candidate because he doesn't seem like the type of character guy the administration would bring in after someone like Jim Larranaga.  Jones starred as a point guard at UVA and then went on to be come the youngest ACC coach at the time at the age of 29.  He had early success and compiled a 146-104 record while there and reached the Elite Eight in 1995. His teams went to the NCAA tournament five times out of eight seasons and he won the NIT championship in 1992. However the program unraveled during his last three seasons, some of which because of off-the-court issues from both Jones and his players. Apparently it was rumored that Jones had an affair with a UVA cheerleader that eventually led to a divorce from his wife in 1996.  He was  dismissed in 1998 after three sub-par seasons and then became the head coach at American in 2000.  Jones has taken American to the NCAA tournament twice but his overall work there doesn't exactly "wow" you.

I can't say I'd really be all that thrilled if Jeff Jones was the next George Mason head basketball coach.  He seems like the polar opposite of Jim Larranaga, who Fairfax and the alumni/student body fell in love with.  When you hear things from media closer to the situation describing the end of his time at UVA as "a train wreck in slow motion", it's difficult to applaud Tom O'Connor for bringing this guy in.  I believe in giving people second changes but it's one of those 'is this the best guy out there' type of deals. O'Connor has to know hiring someone like Jones won't exactly win back the Mason fan base, right?

I want Jeff Capel. Mason is loaded, he knows how to recruit at this level, and his kids play hard. As much as I love Coach L. I want to see a little more dog out of our guys and Capel will bring that. Plus he has something to prove after Oklahoma.

FWIW, John Feinstein seems to think Jeff Jones has a good shot of Mason's next coach, and that Lonergan has a good shot at GW.

(Check out the Feinstein interview under The Sports Reporters.)

Between this, not even considering anyone from the Larranaga coaching tree and this, it looks like Tom O'Connor is making a clean break from the Larranaga era. I can understand if TOC and Larranaga had disagreements, but the way in which he seems to be burning every bridge from the golden years of George Mason basketball seems even dumber than it initially sounds.

I have not heard the names of all the prospects that TOC is talking to but Jones would be an awful choice. If he is on the short list then TOC is not only tone deaf but is showing that he is not interested in moving this program to the next level. Jones has a shoddy recent track record and has too much baggage for my taste.

You, sir, are the moron. This is not about VCU. It is about an AD who didn't do what it takes to keep a great coach. VCU, on the other hand, PAID their coach and assistants. And the longer you blame VCU, the more you will continue to miss the point.

Anonymous Taylormade703 said...

As a Mason grad, I'll always be a Mason fan. That being said, I don't support the hiring of Jeff Jones even remotely. We could hit a home run with the next hire, or at least a triple with Lonergan or Courtney, and we are settling for a single with Jeff Jones. Even Jeff Capel would be great in comparison, and I'm a Carolina fan!

Fact is, VCU PAID their coach. They made a commitment to excellence. As much as I can't stand VCU, I respect their athletic department for stepping up to the plate. The question is: will the GMU hiring committee (whoever they are) settle for VCU being the trailblazers of college basketball in the state of Virginia. I guess we could go back to having our "homecoming" game against our arch-rival James Madison in front of a packed Patriot Center of 2500.

The relationship between me, the team, the school and O'Connor is very very complicated right now.

It would be of great benefit for GMU to hire someone young, smart, and can relate to the players. The only one that has been mentioned who meets that criteria is Capel.

Not too sure about Jones myself but I did talk to a friend who was at UVA when Jones was there. He said on the Court he was great, he recruited well, they played great defense, and he felt like those teamsvery disciplined. He said the cheerleader thing was the big thing. If he ends up with us we would have to hope he's out grown that stuff!

This needs to be a smart process but they can't take forever or we will lose those recruits and maybe some players if they don't have a coach soon. I was interested in Lonergan after hearing Feinstein talk about him.

In March 2010, web site TMZ reported that a joint bank account shared by Tiny Gallon and his mother received 3,000 dollars from Merrill Lynch employee Jeffrey Hausinger.
In April 2010, Oklahoma announced the resignation of Capel assistant Oronde Taliaferro.[2]

I'm going to type this slowly in the hopes you understand it. Then I am done explaining it to you.

Economics: TOC controlled a large portion of the economics of this situation. Yes, Miami made a significant offer--but, based on what has been publicly disclosed, it was not an amount GMU would have been unable to pay. Yes, VCU's offer to Smart increased the price that the market would be expected to bear. But, given that VCU was constrained by economics similar to those of GMU (Virginia public universities), there is no reason to believe that Mason could not have come up with the money. TOC chose not to. Further, based upon media reports, there may have been discord between TOC and Coach L because TOC would not make good on promises he made vis-a-vis assistant coach salaries and facilities improvements. Had TOC made good, Miami likely would not have gotten beyond the first phone call. Factor in that the ally Coach L had in President Merten would be leaving, and Coach L may not have wanted to fight those battles with TOC. TOC's arrogance in not paying Coach L what he was worth, both in terms of money and respect, would appear to be influencing his search for the next head coach of GMU. All of these issues exist separate and apart from VCU's decisions. I couldn't care less what VCU did or did not do--the failure of retaining Coach L lies solely on the shoulders of GMU and TOC. Or, to put it another way, 10% of life is what happens to you--90% is how you respond.

And now I cannot respond to the rest of your nonsensical post.

You must have the IQ of a VCU graduate student. So, let me spell it out for you.

$, Coach L, he like it.
Miami, they offer lots of it.
George Mason, mid-major program
Miami, Major program, have lots of money (remember)
Coach L, he like Money (remember)
TOC has budget, he can't pull from butt
Coach L, he four year away from retirement, getting old
Coach L, he take extra 2 million dollars, put in bank for golden years
Coach L's hip replacement, feel better in warm weather
Coach L's got siblings in Florida
Coach L's aleady got a house in Florida

Or, maybe your theory is correct James... let's look at it.

Coach L, he mad, cause his assistants, not getting enough money. His feelings are hurt because of a promise TOC made to him. LOL. This is big boy land. Coaches have that stuff put in contracts, not cross my fingers... you promised. LOL.

Like i said, are you cheering for VCU now? .... morons.

I agree, is there any possible way of not seeing the bad blood between L and TOC now that he is not even giving Courtney a look. Initially, I wouldn't have thought Courtney would have left his post, but he showed interest and TOC shut him down? This guy sounds like an AFC(angry frustrated chump). Can we start the damn fire TOC petition or fb page yet or I'm gonna do it. I odn't want this hard head messing up my bball season and on a larger scale completely screwing what I believe will be (or maybe was to be) the most pivitol season in our school's history. Where we are ranked top 30 pre-season? And could potentially come out of the dark of mid-majors with a big (and I'm talking like 3 consecutive or 4 out of 5) stretch of tourney appearances. Just doesn't feel like the right time for a curmudgeon in the head AD chair.

nice laundry list of facts. But, what is your point? A lot of things you say contradict themselves. He only has 4 years to retirement, and you think an extra 2 mil, when he could have taken that money a long time ago, at Providence his alma mater, decides where he's going now? I don't think so. I think it's blindingly obvious that L and TOC had a huge rift, or why would TOC not consider anybody that has even given Coach L so much as a handshake? It's a retarded move for TOC and whoever else is allowing this hard head the ability to dillute our program. You can keep reverting back to VCU, but it's not even relevant discussion at this point. I don't root for VCU, even though I was amazed at what they did, you have to be if you watch basketball. But there is one simple fact right now, from an AD management perspective, VCU is whooping our ass right now. You don't think that extra mil for Shaka and 300k for his boys is going to motivate them to hit the bricks HARD, leveraging their final four appearance to go get some serious talent the next few years. It's not even about coach L it's about the management at our school and their inability to put down whatever it is: pride, ego, belligerence , whatever...and do what is right for our school. We were on the brink of exploding into the national psyche, grabbing a real piece of mental market share within the minds of the average person. It's about the management at this point, that has become surprisingly clear and your short sited-ness makes you seem out of the loop...which is not a surprise because you probably go to Mason...haha (just kidding, I go to Mason too), bu now thanks to TOC (another hard head akin to yourself), we may be stuck with the 'Mason's for Dumb Kids' tagline for ever because we missed the chance at pushing this program into the big time for good. You better hope TOC gets canned or you're not going to be rooting for VCU, you're going to be watching them beat our asses up and down the court in a few years.

Did TOC begin by telling you the intriguing story of how he first became a total douche?

7:38 PM
Anonymous PATOTOBIN said...

I think you're asking me "What was Coach L's mind set 6 years ago." Well, i'm not sure, but Providence didn't offer him even close to what Miami did. Let's just say that they did, what has transpired since then, well... he's six years older with a total hip replacement. The average life span of a person with a total hip replacement is just over five years. A lot can change a guys mind with health problems. I don't know... maybe he's going to cash out in two years, maybe his home is worth half the amount of money it was back in 2006 when he bought it. Maybe he panicked and moved all his money into conservative investments back in 2008 and he missed the rebound. I don't know his financial past, but i do know that 2.4 million more dollars over the next 4 years is a lot of money. Many of those financial possibilities are quite farfetched but no more farfetched than thinking TOC's ego is why Coach L has moved on. I'm pissed that we lost him. I want heads to roll if our program drops off even a little. TOC knew that this would happen. I'm sure he didn't want it to. I think he's in a panic and can't find anyone out there that he even wants to interview. His job is on the line. I believe he did everything he could to sign coach L, you can't get money from a rock. They offered him 800,000 dollars a year plus incentives. Does this sound like an insult to you? Check the other programs around the country. I'm sorry, i don't know TOC and i don't think anyone on this post does... but the facts are the facts, Coach L took the money and ran. I don't blame him. I don't blame TOC. I blame the fact that we're in the CAA. Don't get me wrong. I love the conference. We could do a lot worse. The problem is, we don't have a football program. Oooops! That's TOC's fault too. This guy wants to kill our basketball program and he wants to kill our football program. C'mon... i can see one to save the other but to want to kill both? Where's the absurdity in that? A football program costs too much to start up right now, and the basketball program just offered Coach L everything that they could.

sorry, gotta do it... Are you still cheering for VCU NOW? .... MORONS.

I think all of this can be shortened down to this: Last week when overrated told everyone to stop whining what I think he missed was IF weather, family, coaching in the ACC, and money unmatchable were the pull factors in Coach L leaving anf there were NO push factors we would all just have to chalk it up to Coach L being ready to move on as he could have in the past. BUT there are plenty reports that indicate there WERE push factors-pay raises, practice facility, respect etc. VCU is relevenant because if they can pay so can Mason. I wish we were in a situation where Mason threw the kitchen sink at Coach L and he stayed or in this situation the pull factors won but the Mason did what they should have. If you're interviewing you have to ask your self how committed is Mason at this point when they didn't do all they could to keep a winning coach?!

Sucks. No morons just fans and players lost in the shuffle. Let's get a damn coach in here to work with this talented group and let's not drop off because a shift leadership-it's significant but it doesn't have to reset the program to the undisciplined days of Westhead!

9:54 AM
Anonymous Rmjank said...

Going out on a limb here, I think Patotobin's namecalling has to do with the fact that we were ok with VCU's success in the tourney because it reflected positively on the CAA. I was ok with it, to a point -- would have been MUCH happier if VCU bowed out say in the round of 16. But I don't think VCU's success is a huge factor in this whole coaching mess. And Patotobin you would have to agree because you seem to say Coach L's move was all about the money. But to the degree it is a factor, I would think it has to do with Coach's disgust with the fact that the CAA is now on the brink of being consistently in the national conversation come tourney time, and ditto for Mason with all its potential for success next year ... and our team still can't get a practice facility, and has asst coaches looking elsewhere for jobs, etc. That's an insult to the man who brought such class, respect, and money to the university.
In a way, I hope TOC is right about one thing that he seems to be saying between the lines -- that the salary Smart got was over the top. And that Mason really couldn't squeeze out that same amount. I hope that Smart's payola makes VCU suffer in other ways, brings the Title IX cloud over the university, etc. And some extended failure on the basketball court would be perfectly fine by me as well. The last thing I would want to see is VCU parlay their success into future success, the type that feeds off itself with better recruiting, more money coming in, etc. I want Mason to be the flagship program of the CAA, and I'm sure everyone agrees with that. So I hope next year VCU sucks, and even moreso for a few years after that. ODU can get into the NCAA Tourney and win a game or 2, or Drexel, Hofstra, etc., and of course Mason can win as much as they like and then some, but NOT VCU. Last year they did better than us on the court (happy though I was with our success!), and now they are doing better than us in the front office. I hope that that blows up in their face, and I hope we get a great coach who can parlay our great potential for next year into the national spotlight once again.
For TOC, the hiring process may not be all about the money, or at least it doesn't absolutely have to be. But it does have to be this:
1. Find the absolute best coach out there to bring Mason a successful season next year and beyond (I sure hope he is competent to do this).
2. Negotiate the salary with that person, but in the back of your mind repeat to yourself, "DO NOT LOSE HIM ON ACCOUNT OF MONEY."

These are trying times. But nothing would be more pleasant than for all of us to be eating our words about TOC next year around this time. GO Mason.

This time was better than the factoid laundry list, but still a bunch of contradiction. You "don't blame TOC" & at the same time you think "This guy (TOC) wants to kill our basketball program and he wants to kill our football program. C'mon... i can see one to save the other but to want to kill both?" As a fan, you need to get consistent on your position towards TOC. You make some good points as to the factual elements of L's situation, but can you honelsty look at this guy and tell me he's knocking on heaven's door in 5 years? Give me a freaking break man you're drinking the coolaid off webmd.com or something and you sould like that hack Dr. on the Simpsons...haha
Link of coach L's acceptance speech at the U:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjw2Er3-VI8
Watch the first 3 minutes and then ask yourself if his heart is 100% in it. Then watch the next few minutes, listen to his comments about the "youthful enthusiasm in our new AD ... that we are going to be headed in the same direction as a program", "the reason I came here is because of the people".

I'm posting this because it's so obvious of the rift between TOC and L & it's pretty good closure (man I sound like I just broke up with my gf or something...haha) Not only is he down there because he likes the management better, but TOC isn't considering anyone that's even had relations with L. BUT, even after all of this info about TOC trickles out, it is obvious it isn't even about Coach L anymore, it's about the management. We need to move on from L, but how well are we going to do that, with a guy who doesn't seem as invested as the fans in the future success of this bball program?
Like I said you won't be cheering for VCU, you'll be booing them in a few years when our pee-brained AD manages this team into he ground and VCU is stomping us on our home court.

Also don't forget another 'puch factor' as you say...the assistant coaches not getting well deserved raises. If the head coach is the 'head', then the assistant coaches are the 'legs'. Don't forget that the asst coaches had a huge part in the recruiting as of late. They were the workhorses. If they leave because the program won't pony uo the cash, then what's left? It's just not the positive foundation you want to have surrounding your program. And to have this whole organization crumble for a few hundred thousand dollars of asst coaching pay and a temp bball dome that could have been constructed for under a mil...when Mason has around a billion dollars worth of new buildings that have been completed since 2006 or are under construction? Give me a freakin break man. Mason had the ability to charge into the perennial powerhouses of the nation's basketball programs and stay there consistently. But they didn't want it, they're not true competitiors (the management) because they are unwilling to do everything within their absolute power (while remaining ethical) to be the best .

VCU's final four run put the CAA on the national stage again and people took another look at Coach L. It was an opportunity that he's always wanted. The ultimate challenge for a coach at this level is the ACC and Big EAst. He had the opportunity to have his cake and eat it too. In his own words- article for the examiner

So, why, at his age, would he leave a comfortable situation for a radical move to Miami and the ACC, to a place with the lowest attendance (4,700) in the league?

“I’m crazy,” he said, laughing. He then explained that when Merten recently announced he was retiring next year, Larranaga assessed his own career and unfinished business. “It’s kind of the last piece in a coaching career, to finalize what I hope to be about. This opportunity is very special to me. I thought about goals I have not been able to accomplish in my 40 years. I’d love to coach in the ACC, take teams to Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Dean Dome, compete at the highest level.”

Like i said, have his cake and eat it too.

20+ win finish - 4 times
15-15 finish - 2 times
Losing season - 5 times
Winning season within ACC play - 1 time
Losing season within ACC play - 10 times

Bottom Line - This guy can not coach and win at the highest level of college basketball, however, due to his exceptional recruiting abilities he will succeed at the Mid-Major level.

Ga Tech has always been a program to have only occasional success in a marquee conference with national heavyweights in it. Hewitt kept that torch going. I'll tell ya one thing: the dude can negotiate! I hope that carries over into his recruiting! And one thing is sure: with the kind of jack he's hauling in monthly, you wouldn't think this move is about the money. Let's hope he's motivated to make us as successful as we can be. As folks have said, practically anyone who comes in is going to look bad compared with Coach L. But with this hire there is reason to hope. No sense getting into a battle of wits with some of the nonsense on here. I am just unarmed. But it was a very good hire and like everything else in life time will tell. I really wish some people did not have to use swear words dispite their limited vocabulary but then we all need to make something called a point. The players will be happy, the fans will be happy and the future will be bright both at Mason and at Miami. Thanks Tom.

Having a winning record in the ACC is a tough measuring stick - Cremins who preceded Hewitt had 6 winning seasons out of 19 and had some incredible talent play for him
Let's see who he can bring in as assistants before we write him off
IMO we should have kept Coach L and sent ToC packign - not sure what up and comer was around for the picking

As a Mason grad, and Atlanta resident for 6 years, I've seen Hewitt up close. He comes off as a classy individual who is an excellent recruiter. Now he won't have to coach against Carolina and Duke every night. I endorse this hire. He's no Coach L, but then again nobody will be.

Let's give him a fair chance. He'll do some things differently than L., and that's fine. Let's help Paul Hewitt be the best "George Mason basketball coach Paul Hewitt" he can be.

Personally, I would encourage him to hire a Lamar Butler or Ahmad Dorsett-type to be an assistant. That way the current fans will see them on the bench as Mason family from the past, if that makes sense. All in all - good hire.

I hate the Hewitt hire. He can recruit but recruiting is half of it, with all the talent he has had and the lousy teams he has had recently, it shows me he can't coach.

Even if he does happen to do well with Larranaga's players, he will bolt for a BCS job and we will be doing this all over again in a few years.

At first, my reaction was that this was a bad hire. Hewitt had the worst winning percentage in the last five years in the ACC. But when I went and looked at it deeper, I can see that there are some positives. First of all, he has a better Division-I record (255-187, 58%) than Jim Larranaga did when we hired him (177-144, 54%). Second of all, Hewitt has been to a national championship game (2004, lost to UConn), farther than GMU has been. Third of all, he has already convinced one key recruit to stay. Lastly, he was 66-27 at Siena before leaving for Ga. Tech. The bottom line is this: Not every successful mid-major coach is cut out for being a head coach at a school in a big time conference...we may very well see that play out with Coach L at Miami. Give Hewitt a chance... as good as Coach Taylor and Smart are, they are not Coach K, or Roy Williams or Gary Williams.
