Vertrail Vaughns is transferring

A lot of people were wondering who was leaving program given that the coaching staff had been offering scholarships to 2013 recruits. It looks as though Vertrail Vaughns is transferring by word of one of his  former AAU coaches. Still waiting to hear back confirmation from the team but Vaughns was one of the obvious front runners to be leaving the team. Vaughns, the redshirt junior, is graduating this May and would be eligible to play immediately anywhere.

Vaughns started all games during Paul Hewitt's first season at Mason but was limited to around 15 minutes per game and two DNPs this season off the bench. It was obvious early on Hewitt favored freshman Patrick Holloway over him despite his lack of experience.

Vaughns best season was in 2010-2011 when he was an intergal part of the Patriots' huge 16-game winning streak. His three-point shooting off the bench helped drive the team's efficient and balanced offense that helped get them into the NCAA tournament.

Makes sense and I am glad it's happening. This team is going to be very senior-laden next season. So freeing up one of those spots and adding an incoming freshman would allow the team to be restocked. Still have a few rising seniors (Arledge, Williams, Wright, Allen, Bennett, etc). Good to have a frosh come in next year to get a year of experience before the team loses at least 60% of its starting lineup in 2014.

Kind of a forgotten man who deserves more playing time. I hope he latches on with a decent team and I wish him well.
Now let's get that PG!

One of my favorite players from a few years ago. Loved seeing him come off the bench and knock down some crucial threes and hearing the announcer going "Verrrtrail Vaughns! for 3!" He will be missed but this move makes sense, as he has struggled to fit in with Coach Hewitt's offense. A very smart player and talented defender, I wish him the best with another team where he will hopefully have great success and get more minutes. Good luck Vertrail!
