George Mason takes on Hofstra

George Mason takes on Hofstra Saturday looking to get back in the battle for first place in the conference standings. The Patriots haven't lost to the Pride at home since 2007 but any given night seems like it could end up being a close one for them. Hofstra has been playing better than expected despite losing four players earlier in the year to suspensions. They recently played Northeastern much tougher on the road than Mason did against the same team on their home court. On paper the Pride have some terrible offensive numbers but as always a loss of focus on defense by the Patriots often gives poor teams a chance.

After Saturday's game Mason takes on two tough road games at Towson and Northeastern. Wow, never thought I'd be calling those places "tough road games", but that's where we are this season. Conference wins are coming at a premium this year and it's already looking like it's going to be a very competitive stretch into the conference tournament. Programs that have never grabbed that automatic bid to the dance are smelling blood this year and realize it's completely up for grabs. Mason has to start stringing together some consecutive wins and start building some confidence and momentum. They will struggle on the road so winning games at home is a big priority.

Mason still hasn't solidified a second scorer but Johnny Williams has been more consistent over the last four games and we saw a great effort by Marko Gujanicic against JMU. The offense as a whole has been playing a little smarter and we are seeing more slashing to the basket and getting to the free-throw line. Would really like to see more of Bryon Allen driving the lane because when he and Sherrod Wright get going Mason is at it's best on offense.

Would love to see another 40-minute effort like we had against ODU. Just shows that this team can play well when they stay focused and use that focus to build momentum. Perfect opportunity at home against a bad team, but who knows. I never know what to think of this team.

Hate to say must win this early on, but the 5 game stretch after this could be problematic. Four of the next five are on the road, and home game is against Drexel. Drexel has sucked this year, and you would think wins at JMU and ODU would be gimme's but this team has proved all season that no game is guaranteed for them.

As a current Mason student I use to go to every home game thinking, "Tonight is going to be another win. This team is playing in OUR house and they're about have their asses handed to them by the Patriots." Now I go in thinking, "Pleas God, don't let us lose tonight. I can not handle a home loss." I just don't know what to expect anymore.
