2013 CAA men's basketball tournament will field 7 eligible teams

So it is official now, the 2013 CAA tournament next March will field only seven teams. The conference presidents unanimously voted that both ODU and Georgia State will not be eligible for the post season tournament that determines the conference's champion. Both ODU and Georgia State had asked the other member schools to reconsider the conference bylaws that banned schools from the conference tournaments after announcing a conference change but were shot down. With VCU already in the Atlantic 10 and both UNCW and Towson penalized for low APR scores, that leaves the tournament with only seven eligible schools.

Michael Litos of caahoops.com also mentions that league commissioner Tom Yeager also stated today that the #1 seed in the conference tournament gets the NIT bid, should they not win the NCAA autobid. Thus meaning that neither ODU nor Georgia State can earn an autobid to the NIT by finishing in first place during the regular season. So in the end, the conference stuck to their guns, and then some.

No official word yet from the CAA on the addition of new members but Yeager was quoted today saying they are "active in the conference membership business." Also the conference is looking into whether or not to change the location of the tournament.

Matt_LC said...: So pretty much the CAA is a play in game 16 seed! Great. Better off to leave them in the mix and try for some legitimacy v looking super lame w/ our 7 team tourney. Sucks for seniors at ODU and GSU. Oh Mason, so thrilled that we didn't do the things that would have made us as attractive to the A10 as VCU. Guess we'll just have to win the lame tourney b/c how much more embarrassment can we take??; 9:14 PM

BP99 said...: i agree, they knew what they were getting into. Why bend the rules for someone that's leaving your conference in a year. No need for that. It's unfortunate that we're left with only seven eligible teams, losing Towson and Uncw doesn't do much cause they wouldn't compete anyway.; 2:04 PM
Jake Jenkins said...: It'll be interesting to see how the CAA tries to build up this year's tourney. VCU was the only reason the CAA made any money (or at least didn't lose money) during the tourney, and now not only will there be no VCU, but now there won't be ODU fans, which usually make up the 2nd or 3rd largest crowd in the arena. Other than Mason and W&M, the arena is going to be a ghost town.; 8:46 AM

-- I think by next February we'll be thinking why don't they replace the tournament with a best of 3 series between Mason and Drexel?

-- The one thing that has stayed the same in all this is the Mason squad. We got what we got, and so long as we have enough opponents on the schedule to give us some RPI juice, and to allow the committee to calibrate the strength of our team (and I think our schedule does do that) the conference itself isn't such a big deal. Our SOS will be a little weaker than normal (won't VCU be our only opponent to vanish?); we just have to notch a couple more victories than "normal" to be stationed where we usually are on the national front.

-- Still, it'd be great if we started scheduling more aggressively NOW.

-- The bigger concern for next season is that popular opinion, and pundit opinion, is that disallowing odu and ga st from the caa tourney was a bush move. What if Mason and Drex both have very good years, resulting in the caa tourney loser between these two being on the ncaa bubble (and I maintain this is quite possible)? Could the bush move result in the ncaa committee snubbing the at large caa team as a punishment?

There is pecedent for not having the conference tournanent winner go to the NCAA tournament, but still play on the conference tournament....I seem to remember N.C. State winning the ACC tournament vs. U.Md in the 73-74' timeframe and then having to sit out the NCAA tournament, while Maryland went to the NCAAs because the Wolfpack was serving a one year NCAA imposed suspension. Just have Ga. State play ODU in the first round, to eliminate the possibility "Lame Duck" final. This is the classic "definition of cutting of cutting your nose off to spite your face."; 11:39 AM

dsnjd1 said...: Oh', and I almost forgot this is the perfect opportunity to leave that "Dump" called the Richmond Colesium, (VCU's former HOME COURT...that's right, the CAA was not only played in a certain conference member's home city but also held their tournament on their home court for years...how's that for an advantage for VCU!) and seek out different environs.....I've seen the Baltimore Civic Center and the Showplace Arena in Maryland were proposed before VCUs departure. Also, how about moving the CAA's headquarters outside the City of Richmond. Say, to D.C? Its more centrally located, that's for sure!; 11:58 AM

dsnjd1 said...: Well, change the bylaws then....see my the comment above, its been done before in the ACC. N.C. State was just denied the trip to the NCAA tournament (and had their TV appearancess limited), not denied the conference title in the early seventies.; 12:22 PM
dsnjd1 said...: I agree.....but lets purge, clean and sanitize the "Official CAA Website" of all references to VCU as soon as possible. It makes no sense to allow them to remain. I wish them well, dealing with the longer flight times and increased costs associated with the move, which headaches will only be amplified when Shaka realizes next year that his market value is greater outside of VCU, and finally bolts for the BCS money, putting VCU in a very familiar position of having to replace another BCS quality coach in a non BCS market.; 1:15 PM
