Yesterday's news about ODU bolting to Conference USA gave new life to the GMU/VCU to A10 rumors. Speculating is everywhere now about what will happen to the CAA and to Atlantic 10. Did ODU make this move as a preempted strike to save themselves after the CAA potentially collapses? Hopefully all this will be cleared up in a few weeks and this won't drag on into the summer.

-ESPN's Andy Katz said last night that Butler to the A10 is official, and seems to suggest that GMU/VCU following the Bulldogs is far some certain. There is still a lot of uncertainly in the A10 as Charlotte could be departing for Conference USA, would the conference only try to grab either GMU or VCU and not both?

-ODU's senior associate athletic director Debbie White isn't exactly denying yesterday's news about a move Conference USA

-VCU still sifting through pros and cons of move to A10. Is Mason doing the same?

-In other news not related to conference realignment, Penn State is trying to schedule a possible series with George Mason (via BlackShoeDiaries.com)

-Former George Mason assistant James Johnson, who worked under Jim Larranaga for two years in 2005-06, named new head coach at Virginia Tech.

I think that Virginia Tech basketball was/is rapidly sinking into the ACCs basketball second tier along with U.Va (too little success and too many coaching changes in the last decade), Miami (Too football focused and lack of basketball tradition), and I don't see the administration's ugency to upgrade their basketball progam the last few years. They were rapidly becoming a one sport school, and it wasn't basketball. U.Va and Miami, made coaching changes recently, so this does not surprise me at all.

Hope we get that series with Penn State. We still need pay back for that loss in the NIT when Larranaga botched it by not fouling Talor Battle when we were up 3.

Not to bring doom and gloom but as I was reading the ODU exodus last night the new worst case scenario is we get stuck staying in an imploding CAA.  If A10 only takes one it will be VCU.  I feel sick.

Matt,

You aren't alone, people are saying this on our message boards as well. http://www.gmuhoops.co/forum/showthread.php?294-New-A10-Thread-the-other-is-just-massive&p=605

Here is the deal - the A10 wants VCU. Mason became a package deal as VCU pushed it that way. With the VCU AD now in Minnesota, those talks are gone and the A10 is back to wanting a 1-1 swap out, VCU replacing UNCC.

The A10 was never excited about having Mason AND GW in the conference. If the support from VCU to take us with them is gone, we are looking at playing in a bottom tier mid-major CAA without ODU and VCU.

Anyone else feeling sick to their stomach yet? What a bad turn of events.

This will blow.  Hewitt will fly out of town fast and who would want to play for us.  GA State was wanted by another conference and we are not, SERIOUSLY?

Football will do that for a university.

Why would a major conference want us? Mason does not have football to boast. It has demonstrated a severe lack of commitment to the basketball program. We all see the difference in VCU and how they capitalized on their final four run compared to us - I'm sure it has been noticed by those making re-alignment choices as well. Add to that it is widely known the incoming president isn't very interested in sports going forward, and we have dug our own grave as a sports school to be relegated to the dregs of a weakend CAA. Very sad, but let's not kid ourselves here.

I'm still wondering why everyone is taking this ODU to C-USA rumor as the gospel? It has not been officially announced, just like us joining the A-10 was never officially announced and now look where that is.

The A10 isn't a "major conference". They want quality basketball programs, they have no interest in schools who are trying to push football.

I was referring to the A10 being a major basketball conference.  Not in
the mid-major vs BCS definitions - just as a bigger, BETTER basketball
conference miles above the CAA.

We just lost the player of the year (Pearson), our team leader (Morrison), our best 3 pt shooter (Andre), and we still don't have a point gaurd. I'm not that concerned about leaving the CAA just yet.
