George Mason takes down ODU for ninth straight win

The Patriots took down ODU yesterday 62-45 in front of a record crowd at the Patriot Center. Mason started off slow scoring only 4 points int he game's first 11 minutes but came out firing in the second half on a run that ignited the large crowd.  This team has been coming out strong in the 2nd half all season long and they continue to put together runs that leave the other team looking confused and defeated.  The Monarchs inability to take advantage of the Patriots slow start was there undoing as they had an ugly day from the field and behind the arch.  Mason held ODU to 27.3% from the field and 1-of-15 from the three-point line. It almost seemed like Mason was taken in a little too much by the atmosphere and the importance the game in the beginning of this one. But like we have seen many times this season already they pulled themselves together at half time and were unstoppable to close out the game.

Ryan Pearson and Mike Morrison were huge and battled tough up front with ODU's forwards. Pearson ended up with a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Morrison added 10 and 7.  Morrison might have had his best game of the season yesterday as he was assertive something the team really needs from him.  Up until yesterday you could argue Mason's front court players were their weakness but they proved they can go toe-to-toe with a physical team like ODU and beat them at their own game.

The Patriots just continue to find ways to win, no matter what type of game they are in.  In this one they were entrenched in a low scoring game by their standards but still found a way to overcome it.  You would have thought a low scoring affair would favor the Monarchs but this Patriots team just flat out knows how to win games.  They don't let another team bully them into playing a different brand of basketball and they are executing from all over the court.

Here's the most telling play of the game in my opinion. Pearson misses a dunk. Gets his ass back on D and draws a big charge. That doesn't happen last year or the one before.

Mike Mo had the best game I think of his career. Maybe not stat wise but this was a HUGE game for him to play well in. He just kept working with very little drama. He is a nice kid and I am very happy for him. And I am happy to eat my words re A Corny. He showed up and provided much needed ball pressure.

They all rebounded. They gave help in low post D. That was KEY. Boards by Hancock- HUGE.

I am damn impressed. We've talked about this group having potential and maturing. I believe they have come a very, very long way. ODU seemes to wilt in the second half when down by 10 or so and went to the 3's. That's desperation time for a big team like ODU.

Lastly, the ref with the shaved head is the best I've seen in the CAA this season. He's worked the last two games.

Ok, lastly, if they don't empty out for Long more often....I dunno. Given room, no one can stay with him.

Ryan,

I agree with your thoughts and think that Mason is still improving. This is the most athlectic and deep team Mason has had in the 24 years. Morover, other CAA coaches have stated that Mason has several players that have skills that are hard to stop. GMU is now a team and the coaches have done a great job in making this happen.

Offensive boards were huge. ODU looked awful though, doubt it will be the same if they play us later. The Pats need to take care of business now, they're going to be in polls and brackets and all the rest, if I were Coach L I would take away their internet access for a couple of weeks. (I know, not possible). If they can split on the road with VCU and UNI, and win out the rest...this could be an interesting March. Right now they are playing well, but the measure of this team will show in the next couple of weeks. Good luck fellas.

The dunks do not win them the game, but it definitely ignited the crowd, and fires up the team. I also believe it is demoralizing to get dunked on with the force that Mike Mo was hammering those dunks down.

I agree that with the Pats finally playing as a team that good things are happening but I disagree that Laranaga should get no credit. I think he has been preaching this to the team but it has taken time to sink in.

In regards to Mo's dunk, I don't know about anyone else but it got me going. Great game!.

I am worried about the VCU game. That game is the test.

Love the people who think Larranaga is a crappy coach. He has put our school on the map, and people still take shots.

Has he made questionable decisions in the past? Sure, but what coach hasn't. For this team and our standing in college basketball, and as an ambassador for the university, Larranaga is the best.

To not give L credit for this team coming around is completely absurd. Who provides the structure and the impetus for the players to finally realize that it is up to them and that it is they're team ? Jay Marsh? Doc Nix? The goofy guy who shoots the tee shirts? The short fat "security" guy who stands on the court when the fans boo the refs? The Masonettes? (Okay, they could.)

Completely absurd. One of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Blame the guy when they lose but when they win it is in spite of him? L has been around, he' seen some stuff, he's dealt with situations and players. Give the man a break.

Tell me, of all the coaches in the CAA any of you would rather have than L? Seriously. There are some good ones out there; Shavers, Buzz....Who do you want? Who recruits better? Who is going to represent the school better?

Wtf......
