Patriots get commitment from 6'9" Jonathan Arledge

The announcement comes via Capitol Hoops, and it's a quite a pick-up for the Patriots. Jonathan Arledge (profile) is a 6'9" 220lb forward who Mason apparently was on to early then blew up on the scene, showing just how well they continue to recruit.

The Washington Post adds this:
"KIMA forward Jonathan Arledge, scheduled to visit Georgetown next weekend, went ahead and committed to George Mason, a huge get for the Patriots, who have been after Arledge for some time.

"He took two unofficials [to Georgetown] and he liked it but he just really liked George Mason," KIMA Coach Levet Brown said. "He felt he fit there and they've been recruiting him since he was a junior.

"He got tired of the whole process and he loved George Mason on the visit. He was supposed to visit Georgetown on October 2 and they claimed they were going to offer, but he got tired of it. That's it for him."

This is very exciting. I'm trying to take it one year at a time with a nice class coming in this year. But an athletic 6'9 player in the CAA will dominate! He's only been playing organized bball for 4 years, so he has huge upside. Very nice....

Go Arledge, this is great for George Mason. I have been following Kima Basketball for the last 3 years and this school competes with one of the toughest schedules in the DMV. The big kid has talent. This is great for Patriot basketball!!! Where do I get season tickets?

This guy looks really good, but I'm becoming a little worried that we're not going to have any point guards in a few years...

Looks really good for us though, I wonder how hard it would be to go see some of his games this year.

He needs to find the beast in him. Love having him on the squad, but the videos indicate a toughness is needed. Won't start, most likely, for a couple of years. I think, I am no expert, he is still developing.

Your right to say he needs development, he definitely will be a project for a bit. He has only been playing basketball for 4 years.

In terms of future point guard, don't forget Vertail Vaughans in the future.

I saw him play last year at the Lake Braddock XMAS tourney. If he has only been playing four years, his best, by far, is still ahead of him. Happy to have him. Keep playing and go against the best. Don't let up. He will be ok.

I saw him play also last year against Montrose and he held his own against future NBA players. He is very athletic and was taking Montrose bigs off the dribble and shot very well from the outside. This kid is going to be good. Coach L and his coaching staff will get the best out of him. I hope he does not leave school early for the NBA. Kudos to the Mason coaching staff for another great recruiting year. It will be great to have 6'9 Arledge as a "Patriot."

I hope, so much, that Jon is good enough to leave for the NBA. I hope he can start for Mason. But, let's not get ahead of ourselves. He has received no offers from other than a mid major and he is only a three star prospect according to Rivals.com. I saw him play.. (only once) and he needs to work very, very hard to keep developing (based on my vantage point.) If he does, he could be an impact player. NBA? Unfortunately, not one Mason player has ever left for the NBA. Please.. don't set the bar so high.. just let him work and develop. He seems like a great kid with talent... a long, long ways to go, however, to even mention the NBA. I wish him the best.

Maybe it's just the left hand, but he reminds me a little of Mike Morrison.

You gotta love how he finishes at the basket and follows up shots.

"He has received no offers from other than a mid major"

Last time I checked Penn State was in the Big Ten, not a mid major... Vandy is in the SEC, not a mid major... Providence is in the Big East, not a mid major.

It's funny how everytime a recruit signs everyone puts the cart in before the horse. In the mid-majors 3 or 4 stars only means something when the TEAM is winning.

I am so glad Jon will be with my favorite college team and alma mater, the GMU Patriots. He has so much potential as he is new to the game (Rivals gave him an "A" grade for potential, but not so kind on some other aspects of his game.) These can come in time, however. However, let us be real. He is not even ranked with Rivals and his offers were only from mid majors. Vandy, Penn State, Providence... didn't see those offers. If so, these are not bball powerhouses or anywhere near top tier basketball programs nationally. These three offers are not even appearing on Rivals. Remember, offers count.. not visits. I wish Jon the best and he needs to work very, very hard. Mason has some really good first and second year players and more will be coming in. If Jon can even start in several years, that would be great. That is a great accomplishment. Why do you even mention NBA or leaving for the NBA early? Do you know what it takes to make the NBA? If you can play overseas after college, you have done exceedingly well. Again, I wish him the absolute best! NO pressure... let him develop.
BTW, there are many athletic 6'9" players in the CAA.... who still do not dominate. Don't you know how good the CAA truly is? They don't really produce NBA players at all, but the ball caliber is pretty high. Welcome, Jon, next year and I wish you the best! Keep working and developing your game! It is not about what you have done, but what you can do in the future. Best to ya.

The problem is, you look to Scout and Rivals for your information... if you talk to people that have actually seen him play, you would understand how big of a verbal Arledge is. Now, I think talking NBA is a big stretch, but I do think Arledge will be a 1st team all CAA player by his senior year. He has great footwork, good range on his shots, and bodies up well on the defensive end. For you to say it would be great if he can even start, it shows me that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Rivals and Scout are in the business of making money, not evaluating talent.

If you read the WaPo article I posted you can see that Georgetown was planning on offering to him.

Aveaged less than 10pts a game in Junior year is the lowest compared to current top 8 scorers on Mason roster when they were Juniors. Let's not let your love for Patriots get ahead of reality. We would have to wait and see how this kid develops.

Like I said, I wish Jon the best and am so glad he will be with GMU. I admit I have only seen him play on one occasion. I hope he is, or becomes, a superstar. Now, in response to me not knowing what I am talking about, I do know Mason ball and CAA ball. With Mike Morrison, Ryan Pearson, and Johnny Williams all in their first or second years, and the fact that coach plays so much three guard offense, I think it would be great for any incoming big to be starting within two years, especially with only four to five years of basketball experience under their belt. Sounds like we are pretty much in agreement overall. Lookin forward to some midnight madness in a couple of weeks.

This is the continuation of the Final Four effect and it is exciting to see. With the talent we have been adding I think Mason is on the cusp of long term success. Although I have been accused of being a dreamer, I think they will win the CAA this year.

I have been following CAA basketball for years and am very verse in assesing talent. Arledge will be big for Mason. Coach L is a great recruiter and assesor of potential. I can guarantee you that Coach L and his staff are jumping with joy. Arledge is 6'9, can shoot outside with accuracy, take bigs off the dribble, plays very good defense and appears to be coachable. The last time we had this type of excitement of a commitment from a player was Folarin Campbell. Arledge will be a great addition and compliment to what we already have. Go Patriots!!

With Mason's athletic talent, they have to start running more. Then, they can use more players and get some conversion hoops. Williams will be interesting to watch. He should be quite something. Press, run, rebound... "quickly, but not hurried." I love their guard strength also.

There is something SO refeshing about a young man who stops going to all the colleges and hearing their pitches to recruit him. It shows me a great deal of maturity and focus and belief in his ability. It indicates a young man with a very level head and a most promising future. Welcome, Jon!
