Freshmen shine as Mason routs Brown

It was a great night. Not just because Mason won big but because they have a new mascot. Who apparently doesn't have a name yet, and Mason is opening it up to suggestions. Really a work of art compared to his predecessor.

Now about the game. Mason took control early, creating steals and opportunities for their guards. Darryl Monroe was big in the low post but not needed much. John Vaughan (18pts) , Dre Smith, and even big Vlad shot the ball well from behind the arc. Even walk-on Jimmy Nolan nailed a three-pointer. But the most exciting thing to watch was freshman Mike Morrison (15 pts), who like Ryan Pearson on Saturday looked very comfortable for a freshmane forward. Morrison is long, very long; and can move well for his size. It was encouraging to see Vlad and Birdsong play well after a poor showing in Vermont. But really the difference in talent level from the new freshmen and the current role players on Mason is already starting to show. Mike Morrison's emphatic dunk on a pass from Andre Cornelius is a sign of things to come. It is really going to be exciting seeing this kind of young talent play against the CAA's best. I can't wait.

It was a great game tonight! I really like the spark that Cornelius brings.

I was gonna ask, what is the story with Nolan. You mentioned he was a walk-on, is that why he got such a huge pop from the crowd (and even his bench) when he came in and also when he scored?

If that is the only reason, then it seemed there was a pretty educated crowd there tonight.

2-0. Great start. Even better...I LOVE that we're getting contributions from the newbies ALREADY. It's a long way til March, but this is a good way to start. But, let's see what happens in CAA play, too...that's when our young guys will really have to step up.

GO MASON.

Brian,

I thought that was interesting as well. Nolan is a freshman walk-on and maybe the crowd just enjoyed seeing a short white guy come in the game and the score.

Fantastic game! I hope the rest of the season goes the same way!

Nolan seems to me to be the new Tim Burns? Remember to a few years back how crazy the crowd went when Tim went in and drained a few threes.

Just a thought...

Man, that game looked GREAT last night. Seriously, 2 wins on our back and I'm hoping we pull off a win at ECU on Saturday.

Our young guys look fantastic. Coach L and staff should be proud of their recruiting efforts.

Last night was my first Mason game in a year (I missed a whole season living in Seattle) and I went to Brion's after the game. We had the pleasure of running into Coach L and sitting across from O'Connor. Seriously, I'm SO proud to be an alum of this University because we truly pick great and down to earth people like Coach L to lead us. It's great to be back and see WHY we're so great on and off the court!

Awesome home opener to attend. The rest of you hit the nail on the head about Nolan. It was quite obvious that isn't likely to get much playing time so it always good to see those guys get in and perform well.

Tempering my expectations because it has only been 2 games but the talent level that Larranaga has this year is obviously way better than what we have brought in, in the past.

It was weird not seeing Will out there, didn't notice Folarin missing as much.

Have to research and learn all these new faces, the future is bright for us to become the Gonzaga of the East.

As for the new mascot, meh. I am submitting that he be called Gunston, hopefully I win!

Whos been hyping Michael Morrison since the beginning? Oh yeah thats me! haha

Andy Katz still thinks Northeastern is the team to beat while I think VCU will be the team for us to beat.
