George Mason and VCU to the A10 on May 1?

So here we go again. New York Post sports writer Lenn Robbins tweeted today that the schools will join the Atlantic 10 conference on May 1st:

And of course both VCU and GMU denied the reports shortly after, but didn't make any date specific comments:

These so-called rumors are obviously coming from somewhere and now we have multiple news agencies saying this is going to happen. Both VCU and GMU probably have a time when they want to announce this and don't want to be pressured to do so early because of news leaks. I just can't believe that once again these respected members of the media are just flat out making this stuff up.

Good, and good riddance to the VCU Invitational. Now we can cheer on MASON in lovely, thriving and idyllic...Atlantic City? Well, whatever gets us out of Richmond works for me.

The A10 tournament is moving to the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn beginning next year.

Not in front of 11,000 fans  you won't, now we'll see just what kind of fans VCU has when they have to travel and spend lots of money to watch there team. My guess is you won't have more than 500 if that.

Jonesyboy, over the past six seasons, GMU is 3-0 at home at 2-6 in Richmond when playing VCU.  You think that's a coincidence?

A-10 would be such a step up from the CAA. More at large bids and better academic schools in the conference. The Mason/GW and UR/VCU battles for city pride will be awesome. Plus, we still get to  keep our rivalry with VCU and play in the Barclay's Center with Jay-Z watching. I hope this goes through.

Any news on Butler making the jump as well?

With Ga. State gone and Mason and VCU (apparently) leaving what's left of the CAA? In Virginia all you have left is that "I-AA Football Power" (lol...lol...LOL..that still cracks me up), "The Industrial and Normal School for Woman in Harrisonburg",( when you get down to it sort of the sole remaining rural school in the CAA), I-AA football newby (well, to be accurate, "returnee" actually)..."all dressed-up with no place to go ODU", and Public Ivy William & Mary. How long will it take W&M to see that its a better fit in the Patriot League, both academically and athletically and use its large endowment to pay the CAA exit fee to similarly "go quickly".(Or maybe even jump to the Ivy League...why are they immune to conference expansion?) Towson dies not fit anywhere, and Drexel and Northeastern are city schools, and to some extent so is Hofstra, I can see them remaining together in a new CAA centered further north. UNCW is gone though, as the increase in travel costs traveling mostly to the north, will cause them to seek another conference affiliation closer to home. Do ODU and Madison College stay.....together, who cares...Mason and VCU are long gone ,it appears....to try out their brand in bigger and more lucrative markets.  See ya suckers...lol.

.....with its two biggest draws gone, how long will it thke the NBC Sports Network to re-negotiate or exercise an "escape clause", and drop is affiliation with the CAA.

If we left next year, I assume we would still play our regular CAA schedule, but would not be in the conference tournament.  Is that correct?  

If so, I assume VCU we be ineligible for the conference tourney, as well.  Ga. State is gone to the Sun Belt.  UNCW and Towson are out, I believe, because of academics.  That leaves SEVEN teams for the conference tourney: Delaware, Drexel, ODU, William & Mary, Madison, Hofstra and Northeastern.  I guess you could have a 7 team tournament, with the 1 seed getting a bye to the semis.  With this lineup, does anybody see Drexel *not* being the favorite for next years tourney?

 Love to see our basketball program improve, but sad we will never see a football team if we make the jump to the A-10 :(

Cannot wait for this to happen!  If Butler comes along as well, the A10 becomes the best basketball conference outside of the power 6.  I hope this turns out to be true.  So long Richmond!  Go Mason!

coach paul says we  are staying in the CAA not leaving!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know this  because he  was at the patriot Plantoon  dinner event.

They are all given a standard response line that they have to use until the official announcement is made. They cannot confirm it until the league and the school make their official statements, until then he will give you the canned response he was directed to use.
