George Mason escapes Harrisonburg with the win off Cam Long's career day

Cam Long set a new career-high for points with 30 against JMU today as the Patriots won a tough one on the road 75-73 in Harrisonburg.  JMU's Denzel Bowles gave Mason all they could handle with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocks but they were again able to capitalize off another whistle happy game at the free-throw line.  Isaiah Tate was huge in the 2nd half scoring 7 straight points for Mason on their 12-0 run that dictated the pace for the rest of the game. JMU battled back making shot after shot and hitting the offensive boards but in the end they had no answer for Cam Long.  Prior to Mason's big run in the 2nd half Larranaga gambled on putting in Mike Morrison back in the game with 4 fouls.  Morrison rewarded the Coach for his trust in him by helping Mason grab back the momentum off a big alley-oop dunk. Even though Morrison did end up fouling out late he kept his composure in a game with many fouls called and was still able to be a factor despite only scoring 4 points. They were some moments in the game in the mist of all the fouls being called that you might have thought the Patriots would lose their composure but Cam Long kept his team in order and calmly kept making plays.  That is a true sign of a leader there.

The Patriots victory puts them in good position in the CAA standing at 6-2 as they face Delaware, Towson and William & Mary next week.

Not sure of the stats but early on it looked like Cam was going to try and break Dre Smith's record for 3s without a miss. That cat was on fire today, good thing too. Disappointed in the officiating more than I am about some of the play of Mason. To many whistles in the second half. Vaughns needs to get adjusted to the flow of the game before jacking up a 3, his first shot and then turnover were almost momentum changers. Mason proved again that they are tops in the league and JMU has some work to do to get over the hump. GO MASON!!!!!!!

Awful officiating second game in a row for Pats.

AC is a lead killer. 0 fer the game, jacking up stupid 3's 5 seconds into a possession. Get Tate more minutes early. Let AC play D off the bench.

Nice win. First JMU home loss this year. You see GMU's depth relative to the rest of the conference (except maybe ODU) in games like this.

Clearing out more for Cam might be advisable.

Man what a game. Cam has really taken over this team. He does it all and has been on fire from three point range these last few games. This team really has been cool under pressure and you sense they expect to come back and win every game. It was true against ODU, and then this game. We have been dominating all the lesser teams this year for a change too. I can't believe there isn't more chatter on these blogs as this team could really go somewhere. ODU lost today and I think we match up very well with VCU this year as our perimeter defense is the best its been since I can remember.

The positives from today (there were many) was seeing a few guys step up. I have not seen much of Rashard Wack, but I was very impressed today. He is a big guard who showed he can really rebound, is physical and play defense. He can drive to the rim or pull up and shoot. He has been labeled a 3 point shooter, but that is one thing he really hasn't done very well yet. He could really become a good player with more PT. It was clear Cam and Tate are seniors and ready to lead this team this year. Tate has continued to excel off the bench and has been consistent from 3.
This years team has leadership, defense, a go-to guy, depth, and heart. I really think they have a great shot to win the tourney or even get an at large if they come in first or second in the CAA and their RPI stays under 50.

The only thing lacking really is that down low scorer and big-time rebounder. We will continue to struggle against guys like Hassell and Bowles. But I think the overall team defense will lead the way along with the senior leadership. I think Cam should shoot 10 3's a game as he'd probablly make 7 of them every time.

What are some other thoughts?????

I am kind of surprised we haven't seen more of Whack, especially when he started last year in that Villanova game. Kid plays good defense, guess its just tough to get everyone minutes with the depth at guard.

Excellent win for Mason. I was most impressed with the team's composure. I think Cam's resolve is carrying over to the team. Tate should be starting either for AC or LH.

Hancock brings so much to this team. I know, he can't defend on the perimeter. But he's a pain in the neck for other teams. They underestimate him offensively and he has great instincts and court sense and passes extremely well. He mixes it up always and he's competes always. And he blocks out.
I trash AC but he can play D when motivated.
The only thing wrong with Mike Mo is that he was originally hyped as being much more of a player than he really is. He's a great guy and he hustles and he keeps maturing.
They're starting to rebound better and hit their foul shots and getting decent minutes form the bench. Good signs. They're a tough team to defend though VCU will still give them fits with their length and quickness. They will press and Mason doesn't like that. It makes Cam give help and handle the ball and not simply work the offensive end from the baseline out.
