Mason grinds out win over Drexel

Patriots defended their home court again last night to remain unbeaten at the Patriot Center and get closer to securing a first round bye in the CAA tourney. Poor free throw shooting almost doomed Mason but Darryl Monroe, who had 15 points, hit some keys ones to secure the victory. The game was sloppy and niether team really was able to find rhythmn on offense. We saw Michael Morrison have another good showing but his inability to hit any free throws made him a liability in the 2nd half. Kind of disturbing to see the Patriots struggle so much from the charity stripe with the CAA tournament being right around the corner. Although the game was ugly at times the end of the first half was encouraging if your a Mason fan when you saw guys flying all over the place and bodies on the floor fighting for loose balls. That kind of grit and determination is something that has been missing at times this season. They grinded out this win which was impressive but the offensive output or lack of it was a little scary at times. Dre Smith fired off a lot misses and Ryan Pearson was not much of a factor again (foul trouble). It also wasn't too encouraging that we didn't see Isaiah Tate again, who I believe is suffering from some kind of wrist injury.

Although Northeastern lost last night, Patriots would still have the #3 spot as the Huskies own the tie-breaker but the top of the CAA standings could still be a log-jam before everything is said and done.

I'll officially a member of the Mike Morrison fan club. The potential is awesome...tall, long arms, plays with heart...if we get a little bit more muscle on the guy, he'll gonna be unstoppable by the time he graduates. I love his hustle and intensity. Pearson hurt himself with foul trouble, but I see much of the same in him. I was pleased to see us pull out a close victory when it mattered...down by 3 with about a minute to go is usually not where we want to be. But, Monroe came through, which is all you ask from your seniors. I still don't think Long is ready for that role. Smith just stinks. He trys damn hard, but he's just not that good. Birdsong...he'll never be a fave of mine. He plays soft with very little heart. He seems to always have his hands on his knees, too...conditioning shouldn't be an issue anymore at this point in the season, especially with depth on the bench to relieve you inside.

Enough gripping...a win is a win. Two roads wins vs. Creighton and UNCW would be BEAUTIFUL...but, I'll take the one that really matters next Wed. more.

You would think free throw shooting would become a point of emphasis at some point...

Not to get too far ahead but Northeastern has a tough final two games in conference, we could definitely pass them.

Free Throws are not an important part of the game to Coach L. Only 1 year in the past four have the Patriots been near or at the top of the league and that was only
70%. I am pretty sure but could be wrong, but I don't think that under Coach L they have ever shot better than that. Free throws are not important. If it was the Patriots would have a far better record than what they do.

Loved the hustle last night, Dre Smith ruined the one chance Mason had to make a significant run with a horrible pass instead of shooting an open shot. A.C.'s in your face D was nice until he started touching. (play with your feet not your hands)

Good to have the win.

Ugly Win But We'll take it! Dre plays with tremendous heart if that could translate into 40%+ shooting that would be great. NCAA record for 3 pointers-A Curse!!! Free Throws may not be an emphasis but should be. They are "free throws!" Prediction-Long will be ready for the role.

Birdsong has asthma; not a conditioning issue. Yes, I think Long will be ready for the role. I think it may just happen during the tournament. That open shot for Smith- he was open pretty much all night but throwing up bricks.

Thank God no one outside the Patriot Center was subjected to watching this game.

Heaven forbid folks watch a Mason win. The previous post is a bunch of crap. Unbelievable...you call yourself a fan?!? Get over yourself. And btw, the game was broadcast on FiOS 1.

This has nothing to do with a great win over Drexel. Can someone here answer a question? What is the GMU policy on retiring jerseys numbers?

Good question. To me it seems ridiculous that George Evans jersey is not hanging from the rafters. Mason is a young school though and doesn't have a lot of history so it's not too shocking to them behind on something like this.

The Final Four guys deserve to have their numbers retired. Skinn, Jai, Lamar, Folarin and Will. I know that is a lot but I mean what those guys did for this program deserves some sort of personal recognition.

Ryan, sorry to whore my blog on yours but I do have you linked on my blog so I consider us even.
