Recruits Paul Hewitt is targeting

I thought it was interesting to read from ESPN's Dave Telep that Paul Hewitt was still scouting recruits even after his dismissal from Georgia Tech.  The guy has a passion for evaluating young talent and probably wanted to keep the an eye on what was out there in case he did get back into coaching. Don't forget he might have some global reach as he is head coach of the U19 national team this summer. So far it seems Hewitt and assistant coach Chris Kreider are busy hitting the recruiting trails and a few names of kids they are looking at have surfaced. Keep in mind these guys would be in the 2012 recruiting class.

Devon Scott (6'8" 210): He stated on twitter that George Mason had contacted him. The connection is probably from Chris Kreider's time at Georgia Southern because they had offered to him. He was averaging a double-double on his Columbus, Ohio high school were he also played with Ohio State's Jared Sullinger.  He's a video of him playing against Sullinger in a different league. Would be a solid front court rebounder for the Patriots.

Mohammed Alie-Cox (6'6" 240): First of all, awesome name, Alie-Cox is another double-double type player who is "built like a linebacker".  He is a local kid from Fairfax who consistently produces and had a couple of 20 point/ 20 rebound performances in high school.

Eric Fanning (6'5" 200):  One of the latest names we have heard. Don't know if he's a SG or SF but he seems very athletic and can just flat out score. You can find a couple of videos of him destroying some weak high school competition.  The Recruit Scoop describes him as an excellent offensive rebounder and that he gets to the basket with ease. He averaged about 11 rebounds a game in high school and also once dropped 53 in a contest.  He is also one that assistant coach Chris Kreider was looking at while at Georgia Southern.

Donovon Jack (6'9" 200): It was reported today that George Mason has offered to Jack.  A high energy forward who would be keeping with the tradition of Mason having lefty forwards.

Barrington Alston (6'8" 220): Another outstanding rebounder the staff has offered to but I'm not sure if this offer came before Larranaga's departure. Nevertheless he is another example of how the Patriots are looking to upgrade their rebounding.  Not the best scorer but definitely the type of physical forward Mason could use in the front court.

If Luke Hancock does in fact transfer the team will have another open scholarship that they will likely use for a 2012 recruit.  That would make this 2012 class very important to the team's immediate future and we will be seeing a lot more names added to this list.  But for now I wanted to show the type of recruits Coach Hewitt and Kreider are currently targeting.

Well, It seems to me that Coach Hewitt is getting his team ready for the Big East conference. He needs to spend the same time evaluating his current players ability that work with his coaching system.

Who says he isn't doing that?

Looking at his recruits he has not looking at any talent in the area...Sad because there is quite a bit.

Alie-Cox is from Fairfax and this is just a really early look.

He is the ONLY one...All players are good looks, it's how the Coach utilize them. You will find it's not iin the talent it's in the ability of the players to play together and not think it's a one man show. It's about understanding the game and how's it's played. Look at LA....need I say more.

By number or recruits he already have lined up, not to mention his friends nephew due to come there and play.

Friends nephew? I haven't heard this, who are you talking about?

I think we all would agree that we need a big, esp. with Pearson and Morrison being Seniors next year. Coach L did not look too much locally at the end. Let's not forget when VCU had Sanders. Dude was a beast.

There are only x number of scholarships. He can't sign more than x recruits. Also if we just picked recruits from this area we would suck. Coach L was always getting talent from MD NY VA NJ and FL. The best part about having a new coach is getting new prospects. I don't care if you are from Mars, as long as you can ball.

i think your writing has new information but really has to be more comprehensive. there are 2 open scholarhips with the departure of Rashad Whack and Luke Hancock if he goes. You did not mention any 2011 recruiting. Did you forget to mention.

Is Whack gone? With his problem being Coach L, and Coach L is no longer there, why would he want to leave?

I agree, just don't over recruit...That's want Coacl L did and left alot of good talent on the bench for his likes.

Good point. Coach Hewitt gets an opportunity to scout some of best international players this summer and who knows he might even bring a couple of 7 footers or YAOs back to Fairfax. Let's not over speculate and just enjoy the summer.

Who said his problem was just Coach L? You don't know the whole story and neither do I. Regardless he's gone.

I did not mention 2011 because we didn't even know if Luke is gone yet. Even if he does leave what 2011 are available that are worth signing? Corey Edwards and Vaughn Gray are starting summer classes next month and I'm sure they like any other 2011 recruits to do the same.

Agree, as soon as they put that Mason Jersey on they're home.

Coach Hewitt should be spending 100% of his time outside of Luke Hancock's house. He should be cutting his yard, cooking his meals and telling him how hansome he is. I think we can have a good season without luke next year, but not a monster year, a monster year being two wins in the tournamet (swt 16).

I heard on the JT the brick show that LA actually had an issue because Kobe's wife broke up a realtionship between Gasol and his girlfriend so there was anomosity on the court...i.e. break down in communication.

Not to mention Phil Jackson's been out to lunch all year

Using your current talent is great, but from a tough love perspective, I think it's important for the incoming frosh and LH to understand that if they create a void on this team, Hewitt's gonna fill it up quick and they'll lose out on a chance to be on a top 30 rated team. We want him to recruit and have a deep bench, though in an interview Hewitt had with Mike Wise from 106.7, he admitted he needed to take more time cultivating his current players, I just hope he gets some good assts to help in this area. I disaagree with your comment though about Hewitt and how he shouldn't be building a deep bench. You want more available weapons out there in light of the recent injuries, right?

Going out and recruiting doesn't mean that Hewitt isn't focused on the current team. All teams, especially this time of year, are looking to replace the coming years seniors. Don't for get we have three, and there will be a void when they go. Coaches are also limited in what they can do in the off season so it is a natural time to recruit. And in doing so it doesn't mean he isn't focused on winning next year, he knows this team is ready to make a splash next year but he also knows he wants to continue that after next year. Recruit away Hewitt, get these current guys some more depth.

If Luke stays believe me he is going to have earn his keep because coach L is no longer here to baby him....everyone knows that coach L gave Luke a very long rope from day one but with coach Hewitt being head coach you can rest assure he will put the best players on the floor regardless if they are freshmens or not.....earn your keep..no more hand outs and let the best players be on the floor based on ability not by being the coaches PET. Luke knows his spot can now be taken from him if he doesn't out perform those who trying to take his spot....like I said let the best players.....play.

yes, of course of want hime to continue to recruit, but only while Luke is sleeping.

The guy shoots over 50% from the field and he's the most efficient player on the team. The guy hits clutch free throws and game winning shots. He breaks the press for us and finishes on the break. He has the best inside outside game on the team and maybe now in the conference. Besides that, i agree with you.

I'm guessing most of you have never put on a uniform, because in a situation like this, it isn't the coaches who convince Luke to stay; it's his teammates. And honestly, despite the kid having a nose for the ball, I'm not sure he's worth the headache. This is his cry for attention. Tell me you need me; show me you love me. Screw that.

If you actually watch this team friction clearly exists between Luke and other players. Luke also went out and joined a frat last year. Anyone who has played anything at the college level, or even the high school level will tell you that your teammates are your fraternity.

I love this site, but don't know why I open up the comments section because it just frustrates the hell out of me to read how little most of you know or understand not just basketball, but athletics in general.

Agreed...That what's Coach L should've done. Then maybe Whack wouldn't left...

True, and if you ask the team I am sure they will tell you who they want to stay.

Good luck GMU. You willl need it. BLEWITT put GT in the toilet...lost fan base...finished next to last in acc. His one and done's only to save his $7M contract year by year. No team unity and doesn't get most out of his players. Nice guy but as a coach a bum. When you figure his timeout strategy (or lack thereof) let me know. He won"t have one the final 5 minutes of any game. Cannot motivate players at any level.

Oh, and Luke's clearly the teamleader in assists. So you're saying coach should quit giving handouts to the player who gives all the handouts? Hey, we all would have liked for Rashad to have stayed, and we hear ya that he felt snubbed for playing time. But I think we all recognize that it's an unfortunate outcome when you have such team depth that there are going to be players disappointed with their playing time. Heck, that's what half this thread has been about. I hope Rashad finds a good situation for him.
Going out on a limb here, but I wonder if part of the issue for Luke is that he aspires to be the leader on the team. And that a new coach coming in may change the power dynamic on the team, real or perceived. It may well have been that coach L was grooming Luke to be the leader in the post-Cam era (which to my mind is completely appropriate and beneficial for a coach to do, and maybe that's where this "pet" stuff comes from), and it may well be that he's not getting the same vibe from Coach Hewitt, at least not yet or not enough. Hewitt did mention Luke as one of the three leaders he saw on the team (with Ryan and Mike, which made me wonder what Cornelius thought about that!), and I would have to think that once Hewitt sees our team in action, he will see what coach L saw with Luke's leadership skills. I hope that 's the way it plays out, especially the Luke staying part.

Geez, LessType! You're what I would call an absolutist. As in you're absolutely right with all your opinions and perceptions and everyone else is absolutely wrong because their opinions do not coincide with yours. Life is not as absolute as you think, so there would be your ource of frustration right there. And though I will consider what you said about Luke being a source of friction, I for one disagree with your conclusions. And I would venture to guess that most if not all of Luke's teammates disagree as well. And for the record, I have watched 90% of the games Mason has played the past couple years and have never seen any evidence of this tension you find so obvious.
Apologies to everyone else: I guess I'm in a rant mood today!

Well Luke's not going to be the leader at a power conference school.
